As wildfire smoke continues to blanket parts of North America, health experts are urging pet owners to remember that poor air quality doesn’t just affect people—it can also pose serious health risks to dogs, cats, and other companion animals.

While many families take precautions by staying indoors or wearing masks during smoky conditions, veterinarians say pets are often overlooked, even though they breathe the same polluted air and can experience many of the same respiratory problems.

With wildfire seasons becoming longer and more intense, understanding how smoke impacts pets has become an important part of responsible pet care.

Pets Are Vulnerable to Smoke Exposure

According to veterinarians, wildfire smoke contains a mixture of tiny particles and harmful gases that can irritate the respiratory system of both humans and animals.

Dogs and cats exposed to poor air quality may develop symptoms such as:

  • Persistent coughing
  • Excessive sneezing
  • Difficulty breathing
  • Wheezing
  • Watery or irritated eyes
  • Fatigue or reduced activity
  • Loss of appetite

Older pets, puppies, kittens, and animals with pre-existing heart or lung conditions are considered especially vulnerable and may develop more severe complications if exposed to smoky conditions for extended periods.

Air Quality Matters for Every Pet

Veterinary experts emphasize that pets should be treated much like children or elderly family members during wildfire events.

When air quality reaches unhealthy levels, owners are encouraged to keep pets indoors as much as possible and avoid strenuous outdoor activities.

Long walks, running sessions, and vigorous play should be postponed until air quality improves, as increased physical activity causes animals to inhale more polluted air.

Even healthy pets can experience irritation after spending too much time outdoors when wildfire smoke is present.

Simple Steps Can Help Protect Your Pets

Experts recommend several practical measures to reduce smoke exposure:

  • Keep dogs and cats indoors whenever air quality is poor.
  • Close windows and doors to limit smoke entering the home.
  • Use air purifiers equipped with HEPA filters if available.
  • Avoid outdoor exercise until local air quality improves.
  • Ensure pets always have access to fresh drinking water.
  • Monitor for any changes in breathing or behavior.

If a pet begins coughing excessively, struggles to breathe, collapses, or shows signs of respiratory distress, immediate veterinary attention is essential.

Watch for the Warning Signs

Unlike humans, pets cannot tell us when they’re struggling to breathe.

Instead, owners should carefully observe subtle behavioral changes that may indicate smoke-related illness.

Warning signs include rapid or labored breathing, constant panting unrelated to exercise, unusual lethargy, refusal to eat, vomiting, excessive drooling, or blue-tinged gums.

Veterinarians caution against assuming these symptoms will resolve on their own, particularly if poor air quality persists for several days.

Preparing for Wildfire Season

As climate change contributes to more frequent and severe wildfires across many regions, emergency planning for pets has become increasingly important.

Experts recommend keeping an emergency pet kit ready with:

  • Food and bottled water
  • Medications
  • Medical records
  • Leash and harness
  • Pet carrier
  • Identification tags
  • Contact details for a nearby veterinary clinic

Families living in wildfire-prone areas should also include pets in evacuation plans rather than waiting until conditions become dangerous.

Cleaner Air Means Healthier Pets

Air quality experts note that monitoring local Air Quality Index (AQI) reports can help pet owners decide when it’s safe to spend time outdoors.

Many weather apps now include AQI information alongside daily forecasts, making it easier to plan walks and outdoor activities when pollution levels are lower.

Taking these precautions can significantly reduce the risk of respiratory complications during wildfire events.

At Pets News Network (PNN), we believe protecting pets goes beyond providing food, shelter, and veterinary care—it also means safeguarding them from environmental hazards that may not always be visible.
