For generations, cat owners have joked that their feline companions are impossible to read. Unlike dogs, cats often conceal pain, discomfort, and even emotional stress, making it difficult for pet parents and veterinarians to know when something is wrong.

Now, a team of international researchers believes they have taken a major step toward changing that.

Scientists from the Waltham Petcare Science Institute, working alongside Mars Veterinary Health, Royal Canin, and the University of Bristol, have developed and scientifically validated a new assessment tool called FelQoL (Feline Quality of Life). The innovation is designed to provide a clearer understanding of a cat’s physical and emotional wellbeing through structured observations made by pet owners.

The research marks a significant advancement in feline welfare, offering veterinarians and cat parents a practical way to better recognize subtle changes in a cat’s behaviour that may indicate health or emotional concerns.

Why Cats Are So Difficult to Understand

Cats are naturally skilled at masking signs of illness or discomfort—a survival instinct inherited from their wild ancestors. Because of this behaviour, many health conditions often go unnoticed until they become more serious.

Veterinarians have long acknowledged that assessing a cat’s emotional state can be especially challenging during clinic visits, where unfamiliar surroundings and stress may influence the animal’s behaviour.

The newly developed FelQoL tool aims to overcome this challenge by gathering observations from the people who know the cat best—its owners.

Research Based on More Than 1,300 Cat Owners

To create and validate the questionnaire, researchers collected information from 1,324 cat owners across the United States and the United Kingdom.

The data helped scientists identify behavioural patterns and wellbeing indicators that can be consistently used to evaluate a cat’s overall quality of life.

By combining owner observations with scientific analysis, the team created a standardized framework that helps detect changes in physical health, comfort, and emotional wellbeing.

Experts Call It an Important Breakthrough

According to Janet Patterson-Kane, Global Veterinary Science Partner at Mars Science & Diagnostics, understanding cats has always been one of the biggest challenges in companion animal healthcare.

She explained that cats are widely recognised for hiding signs of pain or discomfort, making the development of the FelQoL assessment particularly valuable for both veterinary professionals and pet owners.

Researchers believe the tool could improve early detection of health issues while also supporting better long-term monitoring of feline welfare.

Already Being Used in Ongoing Research

The FelQoL assessment has already been incorporated into the Mars Petcare Biobank, where it joins a previously developed wellbeing assessment designed for dogs.

Scientists expect the growing database to support future research into companion animal health, behaviour, nutrition, and disease prevention.

The long-term goal is to improve veterinary care by giving researchers more reliable information about how pets experience their daily lives.

What It Means for Cat Parents

For millions of cat owners around the world, the new tool could make it easier to recognise subtle behavioural changes before they develop into serious health problems.

Whether a cat is experiencing stress, discomfort, reduced quality of life, or simply changes associated with ageing, a structured wellbeing assessment may help owners seek veterinary advice earlier.

Experts say this represents an important shift toward more proactive feline healthcare—moving beyond treating illness to understanding how cats feel every day.

As scientific research continues to deepen our understanding of companion animals, innovations like FelQoL could transform how cat parents care for their pets and strengthen the bond between humans and their feline companions.
