“Life is better with a dog.” It’s a line that could easily sit on a coffee mug, but when entrepreneur and podcaster Raj Shamani said it on his show, it sparked something bigger than a passing quote. The comment came during a conversation with Rashi Sancheti Narang, founder of Heads Up For Tails (HUFT), one of India’s most recognisable pet lifestyle brands, and the exchange has since opened up a wider conversation about what dog ownership actually does to the human brain, body, and daily routine.

Turns out, the sentiment isn’t just warm and fuzzy. There’s real science behind it, and it’s worth separating the emotion from the evidence.

The Unconditional Joy Factor

One of the moments from the conversation that resonated most was Shamani’s observation about what it feels like to simply come home to a dog. A dog doesn’t care whether you closed the deal, missed a deadline, or had the worst day of your month. It just runs to greet you, tail wagging, completely indifferent to your productivity or your mood.

That kind of unconditional, judgment-free enthusiasm is rare in daily human life, and according to Shamani, it’s precisely what makes those ordinary homecoming moments feel disproportionately joyful.

Life Is Better With a Dog: Why Raj Shamani and Science Actually Agree

What Science Says Is Actually Happening

That joy isn’t purely emotional, it has a measurable biological basis. Positive interactions with dogs, from a simple game of fetch to sustained eye contact, are known to trigger the release of oxytocin and dopamine in the brain, the same neurochemicals tied to bonding, pleasure, and reward. At the same time, these interactions tend to lower cortisol, the body’s primary stress hormone.

In other words, that instant mood lift when a dog greets you at the door isn’t just in your head, it’s chemistry, and research suggests the effect runs both ways, benefiting the dog as much as the owner.

Breaking the Monotony of Modern Life

Shamani also pointed to something many pet parents will recognise instantly: dogs pull you away from screens. Feeding schedules, walks, and outdoor time all demand structure that easily gets lost in a routine dominated by laptops and long work hours.

That forced structure carries real physical upside. Regular walks mean more consistent movement and more time outdoors, both of which cut directly into the sedentary hours that dominate so many modern lifestyles. It doesn’t feel like a fitness plan, but functionally, it behaves like one.

The Childhood and Long-Term Growth Angle

Perhaps the most thought-provoking part of the discussion touched on children. Shamani suggested that growing up around pets plays a role in building resilience, confidence, and cognitive development in kids, and that the benefits of pet companionship extend into adulthood, potentially helping people stay mentally sharper as they age.

This aligns with a broader thread of existing research: studies backed by institutions including the NIH and CDC have linked pet companionship to reduced loneliness and stronger feelings of social connection, particularly among people living alone, a dynamic that likely echoes across different life stages, from childhood through older age.

The Reality Check Worth Remembering

Here’s where the conversation deserves a grounded pause. As compelling as this science sounds, pet ownership isn’t a universal fix for stress, loneliness, or cognitive health. Much of the existing research shows correlation rather than direct causation, meaning dog owners often report better wellbeing, but that doesn’t prove the dog alone is responsible for every benefit observed.

Individual circumstances, existing social support, and lifestyle factors all play a role too. The honest takeaway is that a dog isn’t a shortcut to a healthier life, it’s an active, ongoing commitment. The emotional and physical benefits are real, but they come from consistent care, attention, and genuine bonding, not simply from having a pet in the house.

Why This Conversation Matters for India’s Pet Parents

As pet ownership continues to grow across India’s urban centres, particularly among younger pet parents, conversations like the one between Shamani and Narang are doing something valuable: normalising dog ownership as an act of self-care as much as companionship.

It’s a theme reflected across India’s growing pet ecosystem, from lifestyle brands like HUFT to the everyday routines of pet parents nationwide, that the human-animal bond isn’t just a heartwarming idea. It’s increasingly backed by real, growing science, and for anyone weighing whether to bring a dog into their life, that’s reassuring context to have.
