A heartbreaking case of alleged animal cruelty in Vadodara, Gujarat, has reignited conversations about justice for community animals after a driver was booked for allegedly running over a stray dog and leaving it to die without stopping to help.

The case has drawn widespread attention following the emergence of CCTV footage and intervention by PETA India and a local animal caregiver, leading police to register a First Information Report (FIR) under provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and the Motor Vehicles Act.

For animal welfare advocates, the FIR represents more than just legal action—it signals growing accountability for crimes committed against animals.

CCTV Footage Led to Police Investigation

According to reports, the incident took place on June 17 in the Rudra Complex area of Vadodara.

A community dog was reportedly resting on a public road when an SUV allegedly drove over the animal. Authorities allege that the driver did not stop to check on the injured dog or provide assistance before leaving the scene.

The incident came under police scrutiny after CCTV footage surfaced, prompting complaints from local caregivers and support from PETA India, which urged authorities to take legal action.

Driver Booked Under Animal Cruelty Laws

Following the investigation, Vadodara Police registered an FIR against the accused driver under relevant provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and the Motor Vehicles Act.

Officials stated that the case includes Section 325 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, which treats the maiming or killing of an animal as a cognisable offence.

If convicted, the offence may attract imprisonment ranging from six months to five years, a monetary fine, or both, depending on the findings of the investigation and the court’s decision.

The matter remains under investigation, and legal proceedings will determine the driver’s liability.

Animal Welfare Groups Welcome the FIR

Animal welfare organisations have welcomed the registration of the FIR, describing it as an encouraging step toward stronger enforcement of laws protecting animals.

Groups working with community dogs have long argued that incidents involving injured or killed stray animals often go unreported or fail to result in meaningful legal action.

Advocates believe that cases supported by CCTV evidence can play an important role in improving accountability and sending a message that cruelty against animals will not be ignored.

Community Dogs Also Deserve Protection

Community dogs are an integral part of many neighbourhoods across India. Often cared for by local residents and animal feeders, they help maintain ecological balance and are protected under India’s animal welfare framework.

Animal welfare experts say motorists should remain alert while driving through residential colonies, where dogs, cats, and other animals frequently rest or cross roads.

Even in the event of an accident, drivers have a moral and legal responsibility to stop, assess the situation, and notify local authorities or animal rescue organisations if an animal is injured.

Growing Awareness Around Animal Cruelty Laws

The Vadodara incident comes at a time when awareness surrounding animal rights and legal protections is steadily increasing.

With improved surveillance systems, greater public awareness, and active involvement from animal welfare organisations, more cases of cruelty are being documented and investigated than ever before.

Advocates hope that stronger implementation of existing laws, combined with responsible public behaviour, will help reduce such tragic incidents in the future.
