As floodwaters continue to swallow towns and villages across Assam, the crisis is no longer just a human tragedy. It’s an animal one too — and the numbers coming out of the state are staggering.

A Crisis Still UnfoldingWhy the Animal Toll Matters So MuchRescue Operations Racing Against Rising WaterA Familiar but Painful Pattern

According to the latest bulletin from the Assam State Disaster Management Authority, 540 animals were washed away in just 24 hours, with the toll including roughly 500 poultry birds. Across the state, nearly 1.39 lakh livestock have now been affected by the relentless floodwaters, a scale of loss that’s rippling through rural households already fighting to stay above water — quite literally.

A Crisis Still Unfolding

The floods have already left more than 6.53 lakh people affected across 11 districts, including Karbi Anglong, Golaghat, Charaideo, Kamrup, Sivasagar, Jorhat, Dibrugarh, Nagaon, Dhemaji, Hojai, and Kamrup (Metro). Sivasagar has emerged as the worst-hit district, with hundreds of thousands of residents displaced from their homes.

Rivers across the state, including the Burhidihing, Dikhou, Dhansiri, and Kushiyara, are flowing well above the danger mark, keeping rescue and relief efforts under constant pressure. More than 3.13 lakh people have already sought shelter in relief camps and distribution centres set up by district administrations, and that number continues to climb as more villages go underwater.

Why the Animal Toll Matters So Much

For many families across rural Assam, livestock isn’t just property — it’s their primary source of income, food security, and financial stability. A single cow, goat, or flock of poultry lost to floodwater can mean the difference between recovery and ruin for a household already displaced from its home.

That’s what makes the scale of this loss so significant. Nearly 1.39 lakh animals affected isn’t just a disaster statistic — it represents thousands of families whose livelihoods are now directly tied to how quickly relief and recovery efforts can reach them.

Rescue Operations Racing Against Rising Water

Response teams, including the Indian Army, National Disaster Response Force, State Disaster Response Force, Fire and Emergency Services, police, and trained civil defence volunteers, are working around the clock across the flood-hit districts.

While much of the immediate focus remains on evacuating stranded families, animal welfare and disaster management authorities are also tracking livestock losses closely as part of the broader damage assessment, which so far includes damage to roads, embankments, and thousands of hectares of submerged farmland.

A Familiar but Painful Pattern

Assam’s monsoon floods return almost every year, and livestock losses have become a grim, recurring part of the story — from cattle and poultry in villages to wildlife inside Kaziranga National Park, which regularly loses animals to the same seasonal deluge.

But the scale of this year’s numbers is a stark reminder of just how vulnerable both people and animals remain when the Brahmaputra and its tributaries overflow. As water levels continue to test embankments across the state, families and their animals alike are left waiting for the floods to recede — and for recovery efforts to catch up with the scale of what’s been lost.
