Man Shoots Pet Dog Dead Over Barking, Then Fires at Owner Who Objected

A disturbing act of animal cruelty has surfaced from Uttar Pradesh’s Aligarh district, where a man reportedly shot a family’s pet dog dead simply because it was barking, then turned his weapon on the dog’s owner when he tried to intervene.

The incident occurred in Bhojpur village, within the jurisdiction of the Harduaganj police station, and has left one young man hospitalised while triggering fresh outrage over how loosely licensed firearms are being used against animals in rural India.

What Happened

According to police accounts, the accused, identified as 45-year-old Vishwajeet, was riding his motorcycle toward his farmhouse when he passed the residence of a local resident, Hariom Sharma. The family’s pet dog began barking at him as he rode by, a fairly ordinary reaction from most household dogs to a passing stranger.

Instead of simply moving on, Vishwajeet reportedly grew furious and began hurling verbal abuse in the dog’s direction. His anger escalated quickly. He pulled out his licensed revolver and shot the dog on the spot, killing it instantly.

The gunfire drew Hariom’s son, 23-year-old Vikas Sharma, out of the house. When Vikas confronted Vishwajeet over the killing of his family’s pet, the situation turned even more dangerous. Vishwajeet allegedly fired again, this time hitting Vikas in his right leg.

Victim Stable, Investigation Underway

Vikas was rushed to hospital for treatment, and doctors have since confirmed his condition is out of danger. Aligarh police conducted a scene inspection following the incident and confirmed that a case has been registered under relevant sections of law, with further legal proceedings now underway.

In a statement posted on X, Aligarh police said the situation at the scene has since returned to normal, while reiterating that the injured victim is receiving treatment and is stable.

A Pattern That Keeps Repeating

Unfortunately, this isn’t an isolated case. Incidents where pet dogs are shot over barking, real or perceived aggression, or minor neighbourhood disputes have surfaced repeatedly across India in recent years, often involving licensed firearms that were never meant to be used this way.

Cases like this raise uncomfortable but necessary questions about how animal cruelty is treated under Indian law, and how quickly a dispute over a barking dog can spiral into serious violence against people as well. India’s Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act exists precisely to prevent this kind of harm, but enforcement and public awareness around it remain inconsistent, especially in smaller towns and villages.

For pet owners across the country, incidents like the one in Bhojpur are a sobering reminder of how vulnerable animals, and sometimes their families, can be to disproportionate reactions from neighbours or passersby. It also reinforces why community-level conversations about responsible pet ownership, conflict resolution, and animal protection laws need to reach far beyond metro cities.

As the investigation in Aligarh continues, animal welfare advocates will likely be watching closely to see whether this case results in meaningful legal consequences, or simply becomes another entry in a growing list of preventable tragedies involving pets.
