Most members of the dog family are built for life on the ground.
Wolves chase prey across open landscapes. Coyotes cover long distances on foot. Red foxes rely on speed, agility and cover when danger approaches.
The gray fox (Urocyon cinereoargenteus) does something very different.
When threatened, hungry or looking for somewhere to rest, this secretive canid can climb straight into a tree.
Gray foxes are widely regarded as the only North American canid that regularly climbs trees, using a combination of unusually mobile forelimbs and long, hooked claws to grip bark and pull themselves upward.
The behaviour can look almost cat-like, but the gray fox belongs firmly within Canidae, the same family as domestic dogs, wolves, coyotes and other foxes.
Rotating forearms give the gray fox an unusual advantage
One of the most important adaptations is hidden in the front legs.
The U.S. National Park Service describes gray foxes as having rotating forearms, an anatomical feature that allows them to position the front limbs more effectively around a tree trunk.
Instead of simply scratching upward with their feet, a gray fox can grip the trunk with its forelimbs while pushing itself higher using the hind legs.
Animal Diversity Web also notes that gray foxes have long, hooked, semi-retractable claws, giving them more gripping ability than is typical among canids.
Researchers have documented gray foxes climbing vertical trunks without low branches, moving from limb to limb and descending along sloping trees.
Trees can become an emergency escape route
Tree climbing is not simply an athletic trick.
It can be a survival strategy.
Gray foxes are relatively small canids, commonly weighing around 7–12 pounds, although larger individuals occur.
Coyotes are an important threat, while bobcats, mountain lions, large raptors and domestic dogs may also prey on gray foxes. Compared with longer-legged canids, the gray fox has a shorter, stockier body.
When escape on the ground becomes difficult, a nearby tree can provide another option.
Wildlife researchers have long recorded gray foxes climbing to avoid terrestrial predators, effectively adding a vertical escape route to their habitat.

The canopy is also a place to eat and rest
Gray foxes do not climb only when they are being chased.
They also use trees while foraging and resting.
The species is an opportunistic omnivore with an unusually broad diet.
Small mammals such as mice, voles and rabbits are important prey, but gray foxes also eat birds, eggs, insects, nuts and fruit.
Seasonal berries and other plant foods can form a substantial part of the diet, and National Park Service observations note that gray foxes may climb to reach birds, nests or fruit.
Gray foxes have been documented using hollow trees and logs, rock crevices and underground burrows as den sites.
Animal Diversity Web records dens in hollow trunks or limbs several metres above the ground in some cases.
The gray fox is terrestrial — not a full-time tree dweller
The climbing ability can lead to an exaggerated description of the animal as a “tree-dwelling dog.”
That goes too far.
Gray foxes still spend much of their active lives on the ground.
They hunt rodents in grass and brush, travel across terrestrial home ranges and forage extensively at ground level.
Scientists classify their locomotion as both terrestrial and scansorial — meaning they are adapted to climbing as well as moving on land.
Trees are therefore best understood as an additional habitat layer rather than the fox’s permanent home.
The gray fox did not abandon the ground; it simply evolved the ability to exploit both levels of the habitat.
An omnivore built for changing environments
The gray fox’s flexibility extends beyond climbing.
Its diet allows it to shift between animal and plant foods depending on what is available.
In some regions it consumes large quantities of fruit, seeds and nuts during certain seasons.
At other times, rodents, rabbits, birds, insects and eggs become more important.
That generalist strategy helps gray foxes survive in woodland, brush, rocky habitats and some suburban environments. Trees function as shelter, escape cover, feeding habitat and occasionally denning space.
One of the oldest branches of the living dog family
The gray fox becomes even more unusual when scientists look at its DNA.
The genus Urocyon sits at the deepest surviving branch of the modern canid family tree.
Genetic studies describe the lineage leading to gray foxes as the most basal lineage among living canids, meaning it separated from the branch leading to other modern dogs and foxes very early in canid evolution.
Animal Diversity Web places that divergence during the Miocene, roughly 8–12 million years ago.
Genomic studies similarly estimate that the split between Urocyon and the ancestors of groups such as Canis and Vulpes occurred close to 10 million years ago.
Fossils belonging to the genus are known from North America from roughly five million years ago.
The gray fox therefore represents an unusually ancient surviving branch of the dog family.
Even gray fox populations carry deep evolutionary history
Modern genetic research has revealed another surprise.
Gray fox populations in eastern and western North America are themselves deeply divided.
A genomic study published in the Journal of Heredity estimated that those lineages separated roughly 870,000 years ago, with confidence intervals extending substantially further back.
Earlier mitochondrial work produced estimates in the same broad Pleistocene timeframe.
Researchers suggest Pleistocene climatic change and habitat fragmentation may have separated eastern and western populations for long periods before they later came back into contact.
Not every fox can do what the gray fox does
Red foxes may occasionally scramble onto low structures or fallen timber, but they lack the specialised climbing ability for which gray foxes are known.
Typical canids have non-retractile claws suited to traction during running.
Gray foxes combine semi-retractable hooked claws with unusually mobile forelimbs, allowing them to grip and climb in a way that appears almost feline.
That is why wildlife agencies sometimes refer to the species as the “cat fox” or “tree fox.” If a gray fox is sitting high in a tree, it may be exactly where it wants to be.
A reminder of how diverse the dog family really is
The evolutionary history of Canidae produced animals adapted for very different lifestyles. The gray fox followed one of the most unusual paths.
Its ancestors retained or developed a combination of anatomical features that allowed a small canine predator to make use of the forest canopy as well as the ground.
Millions of years later, those features still allow gray foxes to escape predators, raid nests, find fruit and rest above the forest floor.
The next time a fox-shaped animal appears high on a branch, it may not be lost.
It may simply be one of the dog family’s oldest surviving members doing something its relatives largely forgot how to do.
