Tech entrepreneur Bryan Johnson, best known for spending millions of dollars on his highly publicised Project Blueprint anti-aging routine and promoting his “Don’t Die” philosophy, is extending his data-driven approach to a new subject: his Belgian Malinois, Katara.
Johnson recently adopted the professionally trained protection dog after receiving what he described as repeated personal safety threats.
Katara, who is expected to turn two in October, is now more than a security companion.
Johnson says he wants to make her “the most measured dog in the world” by applying the same obsession with biomarkers, tracking and health optimisation that made his own routine one of the most closely watched longevity experiments on the internet.
The idea immediately raises a bigger question for the pet-health industry: could the next wave of longevity research move beyond humans and into companion animals?
Katara could become a canine version of Project Blueprint
Johnson has not yet published a detailed veterinary protocol for Katara.
What he has described publicly is a plan centred on aggressive measurement and experimentation.
That follows the logic of Project Blueprint, where Johnson tracks biological markers and adjusts lifestyle interventions accordingly.
For Katara, the same philosophy could involve blood work, metabolic markers, body composition, nutrition and activity data, although the exact protocol has not been published.
Katara is not currently part of a published clinical trial, and there is no evidence yet that Johnson’s planned interventions will extend her lifespan.
Why a Belgian Malinois fits Johnson’s measurement-first mindset
Katara’s breed also makes the project especially interesting.
Belgian Malinois are highly active working dogs commonly used in police, military and protection roles. Their performance depends on fitness, mobility, body condition and neurological sharpness, making activity and recovery useful health indicators.
For Johnson, that creates an opportunity to track not just lifespan, but healthspan — how long the dog remains active and free from major age-related disease.
Dog food is already part of his argument
Nutrition appears likely to become one of Johnson’s first areas of focus.
He has criticised conventional commercial dog food, arguing that some products contain compounds that he believes may harm long-term health.
That claim should be treated carefully.
Food processing can create compounds such as advanced glycation end products, but Johnson’s broader suggestion that standard commercial dog food damages organs is not an established conclusion that applies to all pet food.
Commercial diets vary widely, and any major dietary experiment still needs to meet canine nutritional requirements under veterinary guidance.

Why longevity scientists are interested in dogs
Johnson’s interest may sound unusual, but canine aging is already a serious scientific field.
The Dog Aging Project, supported by the US National Institute on Aging, is one of the largest long-term studies examining healthy aging in companion dogs.
Researchers are studying genetics, lifestyle, environment and disease across thousands of dogs to understand why some remain healthy longer than others.

The ongoing TRIAD study is examining whether rapamycin can improve healthspan and lifespan in middle-aged dogs.
That work moves canine longevity beyond anecdotal wellness claims and into controlled testing. Dogs may offer faster insight into aging interventions, although any translation to human health would still require rigorous research.

Pet longevity could become a major industry theme
The wider commercial implications are also difficult to ignore.
Pet parents are already spending more on preventive care, diagnostics, personalised nutrition and health tracking. Extending healthy lifespan could therefore become a major future category in pet healthcare.
Johnson says he does not currently plan to launch a canine-health company, so Katara should not be treated as the beginning of a confirmed commercial venture.
But his involvement could still bring attention to a field that is already moving from fringe curiosity toward mainstream veterinary research.
The key question is whether the data becomes useful
The most important part of Johnson’s experiment will not be how many tests Katara receives.
It will be whether the measurements produce useful, interpretable evidence.
Collecting more data does not automatically improve health. The value will depend on meaningful markers, validated interventions and whether Johnson eventually publishes interpretable results.
From protection dog to longevity experiment
For now, Katara sits at an unusual intersection of personal security, pet companionship, biohacking and aging science.
Johnson adopted her as a protection dog.
He now appears determined to turn her into a living dataset.
Whether that leads to longer life is impossible to know.
But the experiment reflects a much larger shift in how people are starting to think about pet health.
Researchers and pet parents are increasingly asking whether health can be monitored early enough to keep animals healthier for longer.
Katara may be one dog, but the attention around her could push canine longevity into a much bigger public conversation.
