Alfie and Bailey Turn Two: The World’s First Allergy-Free Beagles Are Thriving, Say Scientists

Two years ago, a pair of beagle puppies were born carrying a genetic edit no dog had ever had before: the complete removal of the protein responsible for most dog allergies in humans. As they approach their second birthday, researchers say Alfie and Bailey are proof that the science actually works.

According to a new study published in The CRISPR Journal, the two gene-edited female beagles have developed entirely normally over the past two years, with no signs of unintended health problems linked to the edit — a significant milestone for a field that had, until now, remained largely theoretical.

The Protein Behind Millions of Sneezes

Most dog allergies aren’t caused by fur itself, but by a specific protein called Can f 1, found in a dog’s saliva and dander. In people with sensitivities, the immune system’s IgE antibodies — normally reserved for fighting off parasitic infections — mistake this harmless protein for a genuine threat, triggering the sneezing, itching, and inflammation familiar to allergy sufferers.

Dog allergies affect roughly 15 percent of people, and in more serious cases can even trigger asthma attacks. Right now, allergen immunotherapy is the only real treatment option available, and even that comes with limited effectiveness. That gap in options is exactly what pushed researchers to tackle the problem at its genetic source instead.

Editing the Allergen Out at Birth

Using CRISPR-Cas9 gene editing technology, scientists successfully bred two female beagles on September 22, 2024, neither of which carried any trace of Can f 1 in their saliva or dander. The puppies were named Alfie and Bailey.

Two years on, both dogs weigh between 9 and 10 kilograms, entirely consistent with normal growth trajectories for female beagles. “Both dogs have received regular veterinary examinations and exhibited no clinically apparent health abnormalities to date,” the researchers wrote in their study. They also reported normal mentation and age-appropriate activity levels, with no behavioral abnormalities detected either.

Proof the Protein Isn’t Essential

One of the biggest open questions going into this research was whether Can f 1 actually serves some important biological function in dogs — meaning its removal could carry unintended consequences. Alfie and Bailey’s clean bill of health over two years offers a strong answer: whatever role the protein may play remains unclear, but it clearly isn’t essential for normal canine development.

Real Allergy Testing, Real Results

The study didn’t stop at monitoring the dogs’ own health. Researchers also exposed people with known dog allergies directly to Alfie and Bailey’s saliva and dander, and found it triggered no inflammatory response at all.

That result stands in sharp contrast to a separate test involving poodles and goldendoodles — two breeds frequently marketed as hypoallergenic. Samples from those dogs did produce allergic reactions in the same test subjects, undercutting the common assumption that certain breeds are naturally allergen-free simply because of their coat type.

A Deeply Personal Project for the Research Team

For study author Matt Walker, this work carries meaning well beyond the lab. “As someone who lives with dog allergies, this work is deeply personal,” Walker said in a statement from Kindred Companion Sciences. “For most of my life, I assumed I’d never have a dog but have lived with Bailey for almost two years. She’s a happy, healthy, and incredibly sweet dog who reminds me every day why this work matters.”

Still a Proof-of-Concept, Not a Product

It’s worth being clear about where this research actually stands. Gene-edited, allergy-free puppies aren’t available as pets yet — this remains a proof-of-concept study, demonstrating that the approach is biologically viable rather than launching a commercial breeding program.

Still, Alfie and Bailey’s clean health record over two full years represents meaningful validation for a genetic approach that could eventually open the door to truly allergen-free dogs, rather than the loosely defined “hypoallergenic” breeds that, as this study shows, may not actually spare allergy sufferers from a reaction at all.

What This Could Mean for the Future

For the millions of people who love dogs but can’t safely live with one, this research points toward a future where that trade-off might not be necessary. While there’s still a long road between a successful proof-of-concept and dogs like Alfie and Bailey becoming available to allergy-sufferers everywhere, this milestone marks a genuine step in that direction — one built on two years of steady, healthy growth from two very ordinary-looking beagles carrying an extraordinary genetic first.
