Veterinary diagnostics just took a meaningful step forward with the launch of the Catalyst proBNP Test from IDEXX Laboratories, a new in-clinic test designed to detect heart disease in cats and dogs during routine visits, well before symptoms become obvious to owners or veterinarians alike.

Why This Test Is Needed: A Silent, Widespread ProblemWhere the Test Fits Into Everyday Veterinary PracticeBuilt Into the Systems Vets Already UseExpert Perspective on Why This MattersWhat This Means for Pet Owners

Running on IDEXX’s existing Catalyst in-clinic analyzer platform, already a familiar piece of equipment in veterinary practices, the new test measures NT-proBNP, a key cardiac biomarker, directly in the exam room. What makes it genuinely notable within the industry is its scope: it’s the first and only dual-species, point-of-care test capable of measuring this biomarker in both cats and dogs, bringing laboratory-grade cardiac diagnostic accuracy to a setting where it previously wasn’t practically available.

Why This Test Is Needed: A Silent, Widespread Problem

Heart disease in companion animals is far more common than most pet owners realise. It’s estimated to affect roughly 1 in 6 cats and 1 in 10 dogs, yet a significant portion of these cases go entirely undetected during standard veterinary exams.

The core challenge is that early-stage heart disease often produces subtle symptoms, or none at all. A cat or dog can be living with meaningful underlying cardiac changes while appearing completely normal during a routine physical exam, eating well, playing, and showing no outward signs of distress. By the time visible symptoms do appear, the disease may have already progressed significantly.

Compounding the problem is an accessibility gap in veterinary care itself. Definitive cardiac evaluation traditionally requires an echocardiogram or referral to a veterinary cardiologist, options that can be expensive, time-consuming, and simply unavailable at many primary care practices, particularly outside major metro areas. For pet owners and general practice vets alike, that gap has historically meant heart disease often isn’t caught until it’s already advanced.

Where the Test Fits Into Everyday Veterinary Practice

What sets the Catalyst proBNP Test apart isn’t just what it measures, but how broadly it can be applied across different clinical situations, several of which represent genuinely common scenarios in day-to-day veterinary care.

Subclinical screening. The test can detect underlying, asymptomatic feline heart disease before any outward signs appear, catching conditions during a routine checkup that might otherwise go unnoticed for months or years.

Pre-anesthetic risk assessment. Before any pet undergoes surgery, screening for hidden heart issues becomes critical, since anesthesia carries meaningfully higher risk for animals with undiagnosed cardiac conditions. This test offers a practical way to flag that risk beforehand, rather than discovering it mid-procedure.

Heart murmur evaluation. For healthy small- and medium-breed dogs presenting with a heart murmur during a routine exam, a common but often ambiguous finding, the test helps veterinarians assess the likelihood that the murmur reflects genuine structural heart changes, rather than requiring an immediate specialist referral for every case.

Emergency triage. In urgent situations involving respiratory distress, quickly distinguishing whether breathing difficulty stems from a cardiac issue versus a primary lung or airway problem can be the difference in guiding immediate, potentially life-saving treatment decisions. Time matters enormously in these scenarios, and an in-clinic test that delivers results without waiting on external lab turnaround gives veterinarians a genuine speed advantage.

Built Into the Systems Vets Already Use

A key part of what makes this launch practically useful, rather than just diagnostically impressive, is its integration into IDEXX’s existing digital ecosystem. Test results flow directly into VetConnect PLUS, IDEXX’s diagnostic data platform, where they sit alongside a patient’s historical diagnostic records.

This integration matters because a single biomarker reading rarely tells the whole story in isolation. By automatically placing new NT-proBNP results in context with a pet’s prior bloodwork, diagnostic history, and trends over time, the system gives veterinarians built-in contextual interpretation, rather than requiring them to manually cross-reference results from multiple separate sources during a busy clinic day.

Expert Perspective on Why This Matters

The clinical significance of point-of-care NT-proBNP testing hasn’t gone unnoticed within the veterinary cardiology community. Dr. Sonya Gordon, Professor of Cardiology at Texas A&M University, highlighted that this kind of testing gives veterinarians an objective, cost-effective tool to immediately combine biomarker data with physical examination findings and patient history, all within a single clinic visit.

That combination is precisely what elevates the test beyond a simple add-on diagnostic. Rather than replacing a veterinarian’s clinical judgment, it strengthens it, giving general practitioners access to a data point that was previously reserved for specialist referral settings, and doing so quickly enough to actually influence same-day treatment decisions.

What This Means for Pet Owners

For everyday pet owners, the practical impact of a tool like this comes down to earlier answers and fewer unnecessary specialist referrals. A cat or dog that might previously have needed a costly, time-consuming echocardiogram referral just to rule out cardiac involvement in a murmur or a bout of breathing difficulty can now, in many cases, get a meaningful first-line answer directly from their regular vet, during the same visit.

As veterinary diagnostics continue advancing globally, tests like the Catalyst proBNP represent a broader shift toward catching disease earlier and more accessibly, precisely the kind of innovation that stands to benefit companion animals whose owners might never have suspected anything was wrong in the first place.
