Within the span of just a few days in August 2026, two separate pet food manufacturers issued voluntary recalls in coordination with the FDA, each tied to a distinct and genuinely serious contamination risk. Fromm Family Foods and Oma’s Pride, two well-established names in the pet food space, both pulled specific product batches from shelves after identifying problems ranging from metal fragments to Salmonella contamination.

For pet owners, especially those who regularly buy either brand, this is exactly the kind of moment where checking your pantry and freezer against specific lot codes matters, not as a precaution, but as a direct safety step.

Recall #1: Fromm Family Foods Flags Metal Fragments in Wet Dog Food

On August 21, 2026, Fromm Family Foods announced a voluntary recall of select wet canned dog food products after receiving consumer complaints indicating the possible presence of metal fragments.

The health risk here is straightforward but serious. Ingesting metal fragments can cause injuries to a dog’s mouth and gastrointestinal tract, leading to symptoms ranging from stomach pain and vomiting to choking or, in more severe cases, intestinal blockages requiring emergency veterinary intervention. As of the recall announcement, Fromm reported no injuries or illnesses connected to the affected products.

The recall covers two specific products:

Fromm Turkey Pâté Wet Dog Food (12.2 oz can)

  • UPC: 072705118700
  • Lot Code: EP2A3306 551006
  • Best By: 032029

Fromm Diner Classics Milo’s Meatloaf Pâté Wet Dog Food (12.5 oz can)

  • UPC: 072705132324
  • Lot Code: EP2A3306 551029
  • Best By: 032029

Owners with either product on hand should check both the UPC and the specific lot code printed on the can, since Fromm’s broader product lines are not affected, only these particular batches.

Recall #2: Oma’s Pride Confirms Salmonella in Raw Dog Food

Just days earlier, on August 17, 2026, raw pet food manufacturer Oma’s Pride issued its own recall after routine FDA testing confirmed the presence of Salmonella in a sample of one of its products.

Unlike the Fromm recall, this incident comes with a confirmed illness count attached. Oma’s Pride reported three dog illnesses linked to the affected batch, giving this recall a documented real-world health impact rather than a purely precautionary basis.

Salmonella contamination in pet food carries risk on two fronts. For dogs that consume the contaminated product, symptoms can include lethargy, bloody diarrhea, fever, vomiting, and abdominal pain. Notably, some dogs can also become asymptomatic carriers, showing no outward symptoms themselves while still shedding and potentially transmitting the bacteria to other animals or people in the household.

For humans, the risk is arguably even more significant given how raw pet food is typically handled. Anyone preparing or handling the contaminated raw food faces genuine exposure risk if proper handwashing and surface sanitization steps are skipped, a danger that’s especially serious for young children and immune-compromised individuals in the household.

The recalled product is:

Woof Complete Canine Chicken Recipe (6 lb bag, containing 12 individually wrapped 8-oz portions)

  • Lot Code: BB012729
  • Best-By Date: January 27, 2029
  • MFG Date: January 27, 2026
  • UPC: 8 7938400145 9
  • SKU: F-WOOFC-6

According to the recall notice, the affected product was distributed between February 12 and May 15, 2026, across a specific set of states: Arizona, California, Indiana, Kentucky, Louisiana, Maryland, New Jersey, Nevada, New York, Pennsylvania, and Virginia. Pet owners in these states who purchased this specific product during that window should treat it as a priority check.

What Pet Owners Should Do Right Now

Whether you feed Fromm, Oma’s Pride, or both, a few concrete steps can help ensure your household and pets stay safe.

Check the pantry and freezer immediately. Cross-reference the UPCs and lot codes listed above against any canned or raw dog food currently in your home, including products already partially used or stored in the freezer.

Stop feeding affected products right away. If you find a match, discontinue use immediately, even if your dog hasn’t shown any symptoms. With Salmonella in particular, dogs can carry and shed the bacteria without visible illness.

Handle disposal and refunds properly. Package the affected product securely to prevent leakage or contamination of other surfaces, then either return it to the retailer for a full refund or dispose of it in a securely sealed manner that prevents access by other animals, including wildlife or scavenging pets.

Follow strict hygiene protocols if handling raw food. For anyone who has handled the recalled Oma’s Pride product, thoroughly wash your hands with soap and water, and sanitize any pet bowls, feeding scoops, and storage surfaces the product may have come into contact with. This step matters just as much for protecting the humans in the household as it does for preventing cross-contamination to other pets.

Watch for symptoms and contact a vet if needed. If your dog has consumed either recalled product and shows signs of vomiting, lethargy, loss of appetite, diarrhea, or general digestive distress, contact your veterinarian promptly rather than waiting to see if symptoms resolve on their own.

Why Back-to-Back Recalls Like This Matter

Two unrelated recalls surfacing within days of each other, from two different manufacturers, tied to two entirely different contamination pathways, is a useful reminder that pet food safety issues aren’t limited to any single company, ingredient type, or product format. Metal fragment contamination and bacterial contamination represent very different points of failure in a supply chain, one typically tied to manufacturing or packaging equipment, the other to raw ingredient sourcing and handling.

For pet owners, the practical takeaway isn’t to avoid any particular category of pet food broadly, wet canned food and raw food both remain widely safe options when manufactured and handled correctly, but to stay genuinely attentive to recall notices as they’re issued, and to treat lot code verification as a routine habit rather than an occasional afterthought.

Staying subscribed to FDA pet food recall alerts, or checking in periodically with your food brand’s official recall page, remains one of the simplest, most effective ways pet owners can catch these situations early, well before a preventable health issue affects their dog or their household.
