Even as broader consumer spending pressures continue to squeeze household budgets globally, the animal health sector is proving remarkably resilient. Five of the industry’s biggest names — Elanco, Virbac, Boehringer Ingelheim, ADM, and Pet Service Holding — have all posted higher revenue and earnings for the second quarter and first half of 2026.
Across the board, the common threads are strikingly consistent: new product launches, growing demand for dermatology and mobility treatments, and steady gains in the companion animal segment specifically, even where other parts of these companies’ broader businesses showed more muted growth.
Elanco Rides a Dermatology Breakthrough
Indiana-based Elanco posted a 12% year-over-year increase in pet health revenue for Q2 2026, reaching $718 million. On an organic constant-currency basis, segment revenue grew 11%, driven by a 9% rise in volume and 2% price growth.
“We saw strong contributions from both price and volume, as consumer demand for our basket of innovation drove market share gains and stabilised our base business,” said President and CEO Jeff Simmons.
The standout performer was Elanco’s newest dermatology treatment for pruritus linked to allergic dermatitis, which the company said was its largest single contributor to global growth. The product has already expanded into roughly 18,000 US clinics and captured up to 40% market share in key European markets.
Across its entire business, Elanco generated $1.368 billion in Q2 2026 revenue, up 10% year-over-year on a reported basis. The company also raised its full-year 2026 revenue guidance to between $5.09 billion and $5.14 billion, alongside a higher annual innovation revenue target of $1.25 billion.
Virbac’s Companion Animal Segment Leads the Charge
French animal health company Virbac reported 10% year-over-year growth in its companion animal segment for H1 2026, helping drive total revenue of €768 million. Europe, its second-largest market, generated €314 million, up 6.5%, with strong contributions from companion animal products.
“Growth was mainly driven by the companion animal segment, primarily fuelled by our pet food and endocrinology ranges following the Thyronorm acquisition,” the company said. Virbac’s international segment, covering India, the Middle East, Africa, and Latin America, also posted double-digit growth, generating €351 million and accounting for 46% of total sales, driven by strong demand for pet food, dental care, and vaccines.
The company’s “supercharge categories” — mobility, dental care, and ear care — performed particularly well in Q2, helping offset weaker sales in its farm animal business, which faced supply challenges. Virbac maintained its full-year guidance of 5.5% to 7.5% revenue growth, while signalling it now expects to land at the upper end of that range.
ADM’s Animal Nutrition Segment Jumps 50%
US food processing giant ADM saw its Animal Nutrition segment post $33 million in operating profit for Q2 2026, a 50% increase from $22 million in the same period last year. The company attributed the jump to strategic initiatives, improved operational efficiency, and portfolio actions carried out during 2025.
Across the broader business, ADM reported $908 million in net earnings for Q2 2026 and raised its full-year adjusted EPS guidance to between $5.15 and $5.60 per share, up from its earlier range of $4.15 to $4.70.
Pet Service Holding Grows Through OTC and New Retail Concepts
Dutch pet care firm Pet Service Holding posted an 8% revenue increase for H1 2026, reaching €7.4 million. The company credited its optimised product mix, weighted toward over-the-counter veterinary medicines and pet accessories, for offsetting the impact of a revised regulatory framework governing prescription veterinary medicines.
The company also made a deliberate trade-off during the period, phasing out sales to veterinary purchasing groups and practice networks that did not meet its minimum profitability requirements — a move that limited short-term growth but strengthened gross margins. Positive contributions came from Petlux, its luxury pet products acquisition from 2025, now fully operational out of a Chinese production facility, alongside the opening of its first Budget Pets discount store in Bussum, near Amsterdam.
With its RHR Concepts acquisition (cat furniture and scratching posts) completed during H1, the company expects full-year 2026 sales of approximately €17–18 million, accelerating from FY2025’s €13.6 million, a 7.7% year-over-year rise.
Boehringer Ingelheim Holds Steady Amid Softer Vet Visits
German pharmaceutical company Boehringer Ingelheim reported a 16.2% year-over-year increase in group net sales for H1 2026, reaching €15.8 billion. Its Animal Health division contributed €2.6 billion, though growth there was more modest at 0.4%, which the company attributed to rising consumer price sensitivity and fewer veterinary visits in several countries.
Looking ahead, the company plans to continue rolling out its 2026 product launches, including an AI-based tool for detecting heart murmurs in dogs, already available in the US, UK, and Germany. It is also supporting responses to emerging animal disease outbreaks, including New World screwworm cases in the US, after receiving emergency use authorisations from the FDA earlier this year.
“Looking ahead, we need to direct our long-term investments to where they are closest to our growth markets and where they can create the best possible impact for patients,” said Frank Hübler, Member of the Board of Managing Directors responsible for Finance.
What This Growth Signals for the Industry
Taken together, these results paint a clear picture: even amid broader economic headwinds and shifting consumer spending patterns, demand for pet health innovation — from dermatology treatments to mobility and dental care products — continues to hold up strongly. For an industry navigating price sensitivity and declining vet visits in some markets, these five companies’ performance suggests targeted innovation and product differentiation remain reliable growth levers, even when broader category growth slows.
