A pet food company that started with two pugs and a frustrated search for better dog food is now on the verge of becoming a billion-dollar public company.

Open Farm, the Toronto-based premium pet food maker, is preparing for an initial public offering on the Toronto Stock Exchange, according to people familiar with the matter, in a listing that could value the company at roughly $1 billion. The move would mark a major milestone for a business that has quietly built one of the fastest-growing brands in North America’s premium pet food category.

Open Farm Eyes a $1 Billion Toronto IPO — And Its 1,700-Store PetSmart Bet Explains Why

From Two Pugs to a Billion-Dollar Ambition

Open Farm’s origin story is refreshingly ordinary for a company chasing a billion-dollar valuation. Co-founders Isaac Langleben and Jacqueline Prehogan, a couple, launched the business in 2014 after adopting two pugs and struggling to find high-quality, natural food for them. That personal frustration became the foundation for a company built around ethically raised, sustainably sourced pet food.

Since 2018, Open Farm’s annual growth rate has averaged around 58 percent. During its most recent fiscal year, ended June 30, 2026, the company recorded more than $400 million in sales — a dramatic leap from 2020, when the pandemic-driven pet ownership boom found Open Farm with fewer than 40 employees. Today, the company employs roughly 135 people.

The PetSmart Expansion Behind the Momentum

A major driver of that growth has been Open Farm’s push into bigger retail channels. In June 2026, the company began supplying nearly 1,700 PetSmart stores across the US and Canada, a significant leap for a brand that built its early reputation through neighbourhood pet stores rather than big-box retail.

That expansion reflects a broader industry trend: premium pet food brands that once relied heavily on direct-to-consumer sales and specialty retailers are increasingly pursuing mass-market shelf space, betting that wider physical availability can drive both new customer discovery and long-term brand loyalty simultaneously.

Why the Timing Makes Sense — and Why It’s Been Tricky

Open Farm’s IPO plans aren’t happening in isolation. Canada’s IPO market has seen a strong resurgence recently, with more than $2 billion worth of new shares sold since March, including Apotex Health Corp.’s upsized $1.3 billion offering.

But the road to Open Farm’s own listing hasn’t been entirely smooth. The company reportedly delayed its planned IPO earlier this year amid choppier markets and growing concerns over consumer spending trends, before resuming preparations for a possible listing later this year.

Not Every Pet IPO Has Aged Well

Investors weighing Open Farm’s potential listing don’t have to look far for a cautionary tale. Pet Valu, a Canadian pet retailer, went public in 2021 at $20 a share and had nearly doubled by September 2025. Since then, however, the stock has fallen 46 percent over the past year, closing recently at $17.70 — below its original IPO price.

Pet Valu’s CEO has pointed to a broader pullback in consumer spending, driven by sustained inflationary pressure and rising fuel costs, as a key factor behind the slowdown. That backdrop makes Open Farm’s positioning particularly interesting: according to co-founder Isaac Langleben, the company is benefiting from what economists call a “K-shaped economy,” where higher-income households continue increasing their spending even as lower-income consumers pull back — a dynamic that may be helping insulate Open Farm’s premium positioning from the broader pressures weighing on value-oriented pet retailers.

Backed by Serious Capital

Open Farm isn’t going into this IPO process without heavyweight financial backing. The company raised $65 million in its last funding round in 2021, led by growth equity firm General Atlantic, and counts Starbucks founder Howard Schultz among its investors.

That combination of institutional backing, a distinctive founder story, and genuinely strong growth metrics puts Open Farm in a different category from many pet startups chasing public markets purely on hype rather than fundamentals.

What a Successful Listing Could Signal

If Open Farm’s IPO proceeds and lands anywhere near its reported $1 billion target, it would join a small but growing list of pet industry companies testing public markets, following names like Freshpet, which has built a roughly $3.2 billion market capitalization since going public in 2014.

For an industry that has increasingly relied on private equity ownership and acquisition-driven exits, a successful Open Farm listing could offer a fresh proof point that premium, mission-driven pet brands can scale into genuinely substantial public companies — provided their growth story holds up once it’s exposed to the scrutiny of public markets.
