13-Year-Old Dies Saving His Puppy From Assam Floods

In the middle of one of Assam’s worst flood disasters in recent years, a single act of instinctive love has come to symbolize both the devastation of this year’s monsoon and the depth of a child’s bond with his pet.

Hridip Panika, a 13-year-old Class 7 student, drowned after being swept away by floodwaters in Bamunpukhuri Tea Estate, under the Nazira subdivision of Assam’s Sivasagar district. He had jumped into the rushing current after seeing his family’s three-month-old puppy, Borun, being carried away by the water. The puppy survived. Hridip did not.

A Family Left With an Impossible Question

Hridip was the only child of Deepak and Parbati Panika. As floodwaters inundated their village, he saw Borun struggling against the current and, without hesitation, went in after him. His body was recovered later, following an extensive search operation.

For his parents, the loss has been almost impossible to put into words. Deepak Panika, still visibly shaken, recalled his son being swept away trying to save the puppy — a detail that has since been repeated across national headlines, each one struggling to capture the same unbearable weight.

The Chief Minister Pays a Personal Visit

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma travelled to the Panika family’s home in Bamun Pukhuri village to offer his condolences in person. Inside the modest household, Sarma met and consoled both parents, assuring them of full government support.

“I can help you in every possible way. I will build your house and do everything I can, but I cannot bring your son back,” Sarma told the grieving couple — a stark acknowledgment that no amount of material assistance could fill the void left by their only son.

A Community Remembers a Boy Who Loved Animals

Neighbours who knew Hridip described him as a cheerful boy with a deep, genuine affection for animals — the very quality that ultimately cost him his life. His story has since become one of the most widely shared and heartbreaking accounts to emerge from this year’s flood season in Assam.

In the days following his death, the True Hope Foundation extended ₹1 lakh in financial assistance to the Panika family, who had also lost their home to the floods. The foundation’s co-founder, Kuldeep Khatri, called Hridip “a true superhero,” saying his courage and sacrifice would forever live on in people’s hearts. The gesture, and Hridip’s story more broadly, sparked an outpouring of emotion across the country, with many calling for the state government to extend more substantial compensation given the scale of what the family had lost.

The Wider Disaster Behind One Family’s Loss

Hridip’s death occurred during one of Assam’s worst flood spells in recent memory, triggered by intense monsoon rainfall and a cloudburst in neighbouring Nagaland. Rivers across Upper Assam overflowed, submerging villages, tea estates, and farmland across Sivasagar, Charaideo, and Jorhat districts.

As of early August, the flood death toll across the state had climbed to 82, with nearly 1.93 lakh people still affected across five districts and around 13,000 people continuing to live in relief camps. Rivers including the Dikhow and Dhansiri remained above danger levels in several areas even as water began receding elsewhere. In response, the Assam government announced enhanced ex gratia compensation of ₹9 lakh for families who lost loved ones, alongside a six-month loan repayment moratorium for residents in the worst-hit districts.

A Story That Resonates Far Beyond Assam

Hridip’s sacrifice has struck a nerve nationally, not just because of the tragedy itself, but because of what it reveals about the bond between children and their pets — a bond strong enough, in this case, for a 13-year-old to risk everything without a second thought.

As Assam continues its long recovery from this year’s floods, measured in damaged homes, lost livelihoods, and diminished farmland, the Panika family’s loss is measured differently: in an empty room, an unfinished school life, and a silence that no compensation can undo. For a nation that has followed his story closely, Hridip’s final act stands as a quiet, devastating reminder of exactly how far love for an animal can carry someone — even at the greatest possible cost.
