A seven-year-old Labrador named Bravo has made a remarkable recovery after undergoing complex emergency brain surgery in Vadodara following a serious road accident in Godhra.
Bravo, owned by Manish Mohaniya, a sub-inspector posted at Kalol police station, was hit by a speeding car on August 29.
The impact left him with devastating head injuries.
He suffered multiple fractures of the skull, severe trauma to the brain and dangerous internal bleeding that placed pressure on the brain. His condition deteriorated to the point where he suffered a seizure and was described as nearly comatose.
For Mohaniya and his family, the situation quickly became critical.
Initial assessments suggested that the kind of surgery Bravo needed might not be available locally.
That led to a journey of roughly 100 kilometres from Godhra to Vadodara in search of specialised veterinary help.
Three days after the accident, Bravo was on an operating table.
The injury was far more serious than a fractured skull
Head trauma in dogs can become life-threatening very quickly.
In Bravo’s case, the problem was not limited to broken bone.
Blood had accumulated inside the skull, creating dangerous pressure on the brain.
Because the skull is a rigid structure, swelling or bleeding inside it has limited room to expand. As pressure rises, normal brain function can be compromised.
Bravo’s seizure and near-comatose state were signs of how serious the injury had become.
Veterinarian Dr Ram Kamaliya, who runs a veterinary hospital in Vadodara, and his surgical team decided that emergency neurosurgery offered Bravo his best chance.
The procedure took place on September 1 and lasted around three hours.
First came the craniotomy
The first major step was a craniotomy.
In simple terms, the surgeons had to open part of Bravo’s skull so they could reach the injured area and relieve the pressure caused by the accumulation of blood.
This was the life-saving part of the operation.
Until that pressure was reduced, the brain remained at risk.
Veterinary neurosurgery of this kind demands precise handling because surgeons are working close to highly sensitive brain tissue while also controlling bleeding and protecting healthy structures.
For Bravo, the task was especially difficult because his skull had already fractured in several places.
Then surgeons had to rebuild the damaged skull
Relieving the pressure solved only one part of the problem.
Bravo’s skull had been badly damaged.
That meant the surgical team also had to reconstruct the area after accessing the brain.
They performed a cranioplasty, using a specially positioned titanium mesh to rebuild and protect the damaged section of the skull.
Titanium is strong, lightweight and can be shaped to fit a defect, making it useful for restoring structural protection over the brain.
Titanium-mesh cranioplasty has been described in veterinary surgical literature before, but it remains an advanced and uncommon procedure in small-animal practice.
According to Dr Kamaliya, Bravo’s operation may represent the first successful small-animal cranioplasty of this type in Gujarat.
That claim has been described as a possible first rather than a formally documented statewide record, but the case still highlights how far specialised veterinary surgery is progressing in India.
A three-hour surgery with no easy outcome
For Bravo’s family, the operation came with no guarantee. He was critically ill, with severe skull damage, intracranial pressure and a prior seizure.
Mohaniya said the family had nearly lost hope after being told that such a surgery might not be possible in Gujarat.
Finding a team willing and able to attempt the operation changed that.
The surgery demanded patience and precision from the veterinary team.
Once the accumulated blood was relieved and the damaged skull reconstructed, the next question was whether Bravo would recover neurologically.
The hours and days after brain surgery are crucial.

Bravo began showing signs of recovery
The outcome has so far been encouraging.
According to his owner, Bravo is now eating normally and walking without assistance.
For a dog that was nearly comatose only days earlier, those are significant signs of recovery.
Walking independently indicates that important motor functions are returning.
Normal eating suggests improvement in awareness, coordination and overall condition.
His recovery will still require continued monitoring, because animals with severe head trauma can need time to fully stabilise.
But the improvement reported so far is striking.
For Mohaniya, the contrast between Bravo’s condition immediately after the accident and his ability to walk again has been dramatic.
Why this surgery matters beyond one dog
Bravo’s case is important because it reflects the growing sophistication of companion-animal medicine in India.
Highly specialised veterinary procedures were once difficult to access outside a small number of institutions, but advanced imaging, reconstruction, oncology, critical care and neurosurgery are gradually becoming more available.
Cases like Bravo’s show what that can mean in practical terms.
An injury that might once have been considered untreatable can now sometimes be managed with advanced surgical planning, specialised equipment and experienced veterinary teams.
Not every severe head injury can be treated successfully; outcomes still depend on the extent of damage, timing and available expertise. But the range of options is expanding.
Titanium mesh has an established role in skull reconstruction
The use of titanium mesh in Bravo’s surgery may sound experimental, but the material has an established history in reconstructive surgery.
Published veterinary literature has documented its use in canine cranioplasty after sections of skull were surgically removed.
The mesh can be shaped to cover a cranial defect and provide rigid protection over the brain.
In Bravo’s case, the challenge was different because the defect resulted from severe trauma rather than planned removal of diseased bone.
The principle, however, was similar: once the damaged area had been addressed, the skull needed to be reconstructed in a way that protected the brain.
That combination of emergency decompression and reconstruction is what makes the case particularly notable.
The 100-kilometre journey was part of the survival story
Bravo’s recovery also depended on something far less technical: his owner’s decision to keep looking for treatment.
After the accident in Godhra, the family travelled roughly 100 kilometres to Vadodara.
Transporting a critically injured dog with severe head trauma is difficult because seizures can recur and neurological status can change rapidly. Bravo nevertheless completed the journey and reached a team able to intervene.
For many pet parents outside major cities, access remains one of the biggest barriers to advanced veterinary care.
The right specialist may be hours away.
Emergency referrals can therefore become a race against time.
Bravo’s case is a reminder that referral networks between general veterinarians and specialist centres can make a major difference when an animal needs care beyond what is available locally.
Severe head trauma in pets is always an emergency
The story also carries an important message for pet owners.
Dogs struck by vehicles may appear conscious or mobile immediately after an accident and still have serious internal injuries.
Head trauma can involve skull fractures, bleeding, brain swelling and neurological changes that are not always obvious at first.
Seizures, collapse, unusual behaviour, loss of balance, abnormal eye movements, extreme drowsiness or reduced responsiveness are all signs that require urgent veterinary assessment.
In Bravo’s case, the severity was obvious.
But less dramatic accidents can also produce dangerous injuries.
Rapid stabilisation, imaging where available and referral when needed can improve the chances of identifying complications before they become irreversible.
From near-coma to walking again
What makes Bravo’s story so compelling is the speed with which everything changed.
On August 29, he was struck by a car.
Within days, he was nearly comatose and facing life-threatening pressure on his brain.
On September 1, a veterinary team opened his skull, relieved the pressure and reconstructed the fractured area with titanium mesh.
Now, he is walking again.
He is eating.
And according to his family, he is steadily returning to health.
For Dr Kamaliya and his team, the case represents a major surgical achievement.
For Gujarat’s veterinary community, it may become an example of what advanced small-animal neurosurgery can achieve when the right expertise and equipment are available.
For Mohaniya, however, the meaning is far simpler.
Bravo survived.
A dog who had almost no chance after a devastating road accident is back on his feet.
And for a family that had nearly lost hope, that is the outcome that matters most.
