Gujarat Forest Team Sets Trap for Leopards, Catches Three Stray Dogs Instead

A serious wildlife safety operation in Gujarat’s Valsad district recently took a distinctly lighter turn, when a cage trap set specifically to capture leopards ended up catching an entirely different, and far more familiar, set of animals: three stray dogs from the very village the operation was meant to protect.

The incident, which unfolded in Ghadoi village in Valsad taluka, has since gone viral, offering a moment of comic relief in the middle of what remains a genuinely serious human-wildlife conflict situation.

What Triggered the Operation in the First Place

The story began when locals in Ghadoi reported seeing three leopards roaming around the village outskirts, sightings that understandably raised real safety concerns among residents living close to the forest edge.

Acting on these reports, the Gujarat Forest Department moved quickly. Officers surveyed the area and identified pug marks confirming the presence of three separate leopards near the village. In response, the department deployed three cages across different locations around Ghadoi, following standard wildlife capture protocol.

Each cage was baited with live chickens, a tried-and-tested lure for leopards, with tracking cameras positioned nearby to monitor activity and confirm captures as they happened.

An Early Win for the Forest Team

The operation showed promising early results. On Tuesday, one of the three leopards was successfully lured into a cage, captured safely, and relocated deep into the forest, well away from the village and its residents.

With one leopard accounted for, forest officials left the remaining two cages active, continuing their efforts to track down and safely relocate the other two leopards still believed to be in the vicinity.

The Unexpected Catch

That’s where the story took its unusual turn. On Thursday evening, rather than a leopard, three stray dogs from the village wandered into one of the remaining cages, drawn in by the same chicken bait meant to lure the far more elusive predators. Once inside, the dogs triggered the trap, sealing themselves in.

Word spread quickly through the village. Curious residents gathered around the cage to see what exactly had been caught, and several began filming the scene, three very ordinary, slightly bewildered stray dogs sitting inside a trap built for leopards. The videos were shared widely on social media soon after, quickly turning what forest officials had intended as a serious conservation and safety operation into an unexpectedly funny moment that resonated well beyond the village itself.

The Dogs Were Safely Released

Despite the unusual circumstances, the outcome for the three dogs was entirely positive. Valsad Range Forest Officer R. C. Gavit confirmed that forest teams responded promptly once the trap was triggered, rescuing the dogs and safely releasing them back into the village unharmed.

With that particular cage cleared, the two remaining traps continue to stay active, as the Forest Department presses on with its efforts to locate and safely capture the two leopards still believed to be roaming near Ghadoi’s outskirts.

A Light Moment Within a Serious Issue

While the viral video captured plenty of laughs online, it’s worth remembering the operation itself addresses a genuinely important concern. Leopard sightings near human settlements are not uncommon in parts of Gujarat, where forest areas often border agricultural land and village outskirts, creating regular opportunities for human-wildlife interaction.

Forest departments across India rely on exactly this kind of careful, monitored trapping and relocation process to manage such situations safely, both for the residents living nearby and for the leopards themselves, who are simply following natural movement patterns rather than exhibiting unusual aggression. That two leopards remain to be safely captured and relocated means the Ghadoi operation is very much still ongoing.

Why the Story Resonated So Widely

Part of what made this incident spread so quickly online is its sheer relatability. Anyone who has spent time in a village or town with a stray dog population can appreciate the scene: three curious dogs, drawn by the smell of free chicken, wandering straight into a professionally engineered wildlife trap clearly not designed with them in mind.

It’s a reminder that even carefully planned wildlife operations can run into delightfully unpredictable variables, and that sometimes, the most viral moments come not from the leopards everyone was watching for, but from the village dogs no one was expecting to see at all.
