The Lala Lajpat Rai University of Veterinary and Animal Sciences (LUVAS) has launched an advanced dialysis facility for pet dogs at its Veterinary Clinical Complex in Hisar, giving critically ill animals suffering from severe kidney disease a genuine shot at survival. The initiative was introduced under the guidance of Vice-Chancellor Dr Vinod Kumar Verma and marks a significant addition to specialised veterinary care in the state.
Who the Facility Will Serve
For now, the dialysis service is being offered to dogs diagnosed with kidney disorders who are found medically suitable for the procedure following a full clinical evaluation — an important safeguard, since dialysis is a demanding treatment that isn’t appropriate for every case.
The unit is being run under the supervision of Dr Gyan Singh, head of the Veterinary Clinical Complex, supported by a team of specialist veterinarians dedicated to managing each case with the level of precision the procedure demands.
Why Dialysis Matters for Dogs With Kidney Disease
Dialysis works by artificially removing toxins and excess fluid from the body when the kidneys can no longer perform that job effectively on their own. It isn’t a cure, but for dogs facing kidney failure, it can be the difference between a rapid decline and meaningful extra time — often enough for damaged kidneys to recover, or for a chronic condition to be managed with a far better quality of life.
Veterinary experts note that facilities like this one are expected to meaningfully improve survival chances and overall wellbeing for critically ill companion animals, particularly those who previously had nowhere to turn once conventional treatment options were exhausted.
Built by a Trained, Dedicated Team
Behind the launch is a team led by Dr Tarun Kumar and Dr Nilesh Sindhu, working alongside clinicians, postgraduate students, interns, and technical staff who came together to establish the unit from the ground up.
To prepare for such a technically demanding service, the team recently completed specialised hands-on training in veterinary nephrology and dialysis at Guru Angad Dev Veterinary and Animal Sciences University (GADVASU) in Ludhiana — home to one of North India’s most established veterinary dialysis programmes. That kind of targeted training matters enormously in a field where precision equipment handling and careful patient selection can directly affect outcomes.
What’s Next for the Programme
While the dialysis service currently caters exclusively to pet dogs, LUVAS has indicated that it plans to extend the facility to other animal species as infrastructure and technical resources continue to expand — a sign that this launch is meant to be the starting point of a much broader push into advanced veterinary nephrology.
For a field where treatment access has historically been concentrated in just a few metro centres, this expansion into Haryana represents real progress. It gives pet owners in the region a nearby option for a condition that, until now, often meant a difficult and uncertain road forward for both dogs and the families who love them.
