A young wild elephant has been rescued from an abandoned open well in Odisha’s Dhenkanal district after villagers spotted the injured animal and alerted forest authorities, triggering a coordinated operation involving wildlife teams, firefighters and local residents.
The rescue took place near Bahandei Village in Kaunriapala Beat, Gadasila Section of Dhenkanal Range on September 1, 2026.
According to an official update shared by the Dhenkanal Divisional Forest Officer, the animal was a male elephant approximately three to four years old.
The calf is believed to have fallen into the well while moving through the area with its herd during the previous night.
By the time villagers discovered him, he had been trapped for several hours and was reportedly weak, injured and bleeding.
Their quick alert became the first step in a rescue operation that would bring together multiple emergency teams.
Forest teams, firefighters and villagers join the rescue
Forest personnel reached the location after receiving information from the community and were joined by the Rapid Response Team of the Dhenkanal Forest Division.
Personnel from the Dhenkanal Fire Division were also brought in, while villagers assisted around the rescue site.
The calf was trapped inside a half-filled open well, creating a difficult extraction problem.
Large wild animals can suffer additional injuries if a rescue is rushed, particularly when they are already exhausted, frightened or struggling inside a confined space.
An earthmover was used during the operation to help safely bring the elephant out.
Forest officials later said the extraction was completed without causing further injury to the calf.
The operation underlined the value of coordination between specialised wildlife teams and local emergency services, particularly in forest-fringe landscapes where incidents can develop far from dedicated wildlife rescue facilities.
Veterinary treatment began immediately
Once the calf was brought out, veterinary personnel examined him at the site.
The animal received first aid and supportive treatment for injuries sustained while trapped in the well.
He was then shifted to an Elephant Rescue Centre for further treatment, care and observation.
Officials reported that the calf was stable after the rescue and would continue to be monitored as he recovered.
The immediate priority is his medical condition rather than a rapid return to the wild.
Any future decision on release or possible reunion with his herd would depend on recovery, veterinary assessment and the circumstances of the herd’s movement.
Forest officials have not publicly announced a reunion timeline.

Community response made the difference
The incident is also a reminder of the role local residents play in wildlife protection.
Bahandei villagers did not attempt an improvised rescue on their own.
Instead, they alerted the Forest Department, allowing trained personnel and emergency services to organise the extraction.
That response reduced the risk both to the elephant and to people.
Elephants can become highly distressed when trapped or separated from a herd, and even young animals can be dangerous when frightened.
The Dhenkanal Forest Division publicly thanked its field staff, Rapid Response Team, Fire Division personnel and the local community for their coordination and prompt response.

Beyond the successful rescue, the location of the accident raises a larger conservation concern.

Repeated incidents suggest that rescue capacity alone cannot solve the problem.
Preventing animals from falling in is far safer than trying to extract them after an accident.
Open wells are a known threat in elephant landscapes
Wildlife organisations have documented similar incidents elsewhere in India for years.
The Wildlife Trust of India has previously worked in elephant-use areas to identify abandoned wells and either cover them or build protective walls around them.
Its field experience has shown that irrigation wells left open near forest-fringe farms can trap elephants, particularly calves, as well as other wildlife.
Simple preventive measures can include filling wells that are no longer used, constructing secure parapet walls or installing barriers around active wells.
The principle is straightforward: infrastructure that is harmless during daylight to people who know it is there can be extremely dangerous to an animal moving through unfamiliar terrain after dark.
Dhenkanal sits inside an important elephant landscape
The broader setting makes the rescue particularly relevant.
Odisha supports more than 2,100 wild Asian elephants, according to a 2026 IUCN field initiative examining human-elephant coexistence in the state.
Dhenkanal and neighbouring Angul are among the landscapes where elephants regularly move through a mosaic of forests, villages and agricultural land.
Forest teams in these areas already use a combination of early-warning systems, local community networks, drones, solar fencing and other measures to reduce conflict and help people respond safely to elephant movement.
The Bahandei rescue shows another side of that coexistence challenge.
Not every dangerous encounter involves crop damage or direct human-elephant conflict.
Sometimes the threat comes from ordinary human infrastructure placed along wildlife movement routes.
Rescue success should lead to prevention
The calf’s survival is the immediate good news.
Villagers noticed him, emergency teams responded, heavy machinery was available and veterinarians were able to begin treatment quickly.
But the incident also raises a practical question for forest-fringe communities: how many abandoned wells, pits or similar hazards remain unprotected along elephant movement routes?
Mapping those structures and securing them could prevent future emergencies.
For local authorities and forest departments, such preventive work may be less dramatic than a major rescue operation, but it can save both wildlife and rescue teams from dangerous situations.
