India’s relationship with dogs is changing. Dogs are increasingly living indoors, becoming part of nuclear families, travelling with their owners, visiting professional groomers, eating commercially prepared diets and accessing services that would have been unfamiliar to many Indian pet owners a decade ago. The pet-care industry has noticed. More brands are entering the market. More products are appearing on shelves and marketplaces. Quick commerce is making pet essentials available within minutes in several cities. Premium nutrition, functional treats, grooming, healthcare, accessories and specialised services are expanding the category. But there is an uncomfortable question worth asking on International Dog Day: Are we building a better industry for dogs—or simply a bigger one?

The “more” economy

India’s pet-care market is no longer a niche consumer category. Wazir Advisors estimates India’s pet-care market at around ₹10,300 crore in 2025, with the market projected to grow to approximately ₹25,000–26,000 crore by 2030. Pet food remains the largest component, accounting for roughly 59% of the market in its analysis. Euromonitor’s latest India pet-care analysis similarly points to continued growth, driven by urbanisation, increasing awareness of pet health and wellness, and rising demand for premium and specialised products. Its current analysis notes that dog food continues to lead in volumes and value, while cat food is showing particularly dynamic premium growth. The opportunity is enormous. But market growth creates a temptation: when demand rises, the easiest response is to create more SKUs. More flavours, more treats, more supplements, more toys, more grooming products, more claims, more packaging, more convenience and eventually, more noise. The dog, however, does not experience the pet industry through SKU counts.

Dogs don’t read packaging

A dog doesn’t know whether a product is labelled “premium.” It doesn’t understand a marketing campaign. It doesn’t care how sophisticated the packaging looks or how many followers a brand has. It experiences the result.
Does the food suit the individual dog?
Is the calorie intake appropriate?
Is the treat being overfed?
Is the toy safe and genuinely engaging?
Does the dog have opportunities to exercise, explore and behave naturally?
Is preventive healthcare being maintained?
Is the animal comfortable?
Is it being trained and handled responsibly?
These are much less glamorous questions—but they are closer to what actually determines a dog’s quality of life. The World Small Animal Veterinary Association (WSAVA) specifically emphasises that nutrition should be individually tailored and that veterinary teams have a central role in nutritional assessment. It also cautions that marketing language on pet-food packaging can be less useful than the underlying nutritional information and transparency provided by manufacturers. That distinction matters. Because pet-friendly marketing and pet-first thinking are not the same thing.

Better products begin with better questions

The next phase of India’s pet industry should not be defined simply by premiumisation.
It should be defined by relevance.
Instead of asking:
“What product can we sell?”
brands should increasingly ask:
“What problem does this solve for the dog?”
Instead of:
“How do we make this product look premium?”
ask:
“What makes this product meaningfully better?”
Instead of:
“How quickly can we get it delivered?”
ask:
“Are we making responsible choices easier for the pet parent?”
That shift may sound subtle. Commercially, it is anything but. A product designed around genuine nutritional, behavioural, environmental or healthcare needs can create deeper trust and longer-term relevance than one built primarily around a marketing trend.

The responsibility extends beyond owned dogs

There is another part of India’s dog story that the organised pet industry cannot ignore. India’s dog population includes not only companion dogs living inside homes, but also community and free-roaming dogs. That means “dog care” cannot be viewed exclusively through the lens of the consumer market. The World Organisation for Animal Health (WOAH) states that dogs are dependent on human communities and that there is an ethical responsibility to protect their health and welfare—even in the absence of ownership. Its guidance on dog population management also links responsible ownership, vaccination, reproduction control, identification, welfare and public safety. This is where the conversation becomes bigger than pet products. A mature dog-care ecosystem needs responsible owners. It needs accessible veterinary care, vaccination and preventive-health awareness, better education around behaviour and safe dog-human interaction, businesses that understand welfare rather than treating it as a marketing theme and communities that can coexist safely with dogs. Growth without responsibility can simply scale the problems along with the opportunity.

The next competitive advantage may be trust

For years, the pet industry competed on availability, price, ingredients, packaging, distribution and increasingly on convenience. Those things will continue to matter. But as the category becomes more crowded, another factor becomes harder to copy: trust. A brand that clearly communicates what its product does—and what it does not do—can build credibility. A manufacturer willing to provide meaningful nutritional information can stand apart. A retailer that helps pet parents make informed choices rather than simply pushing the highest-margin SKU can create loyalty. A marketplace that improves discovery while preserving responsible product information can add real value. And a veterinary ecosystem that connects prevention, nutrition and treatment can influence outcomes far beyond a single transaction.
In other words: The strongest pet businesses may eventually be the ones that make responsible pet parenting easier.

So, what should “better” mean?

For the dog industry, “better” does not necessarily mean more expensive. It can mean:
Better nutrition : Food and treats appropriate to the individual dog’s needs, with clearer and more useful information.
Better health : Greater emphasis on preventive care rather than waiting for problems to become emergencies.
Better behaviour : Understanding that training, socialisation, enrichment and safe human-dog interaction are part of welfare.
Better products : Products designed around actual canine needs rather than simply adding another variation to an already crowded shelf.
Better businesses : Brands that treat transparency, safety and responsible communication as fundamentals.
Better access.
Making quality care and information more accessible—not only to premium urban consumers.
Better coexistence. Recognising that India’s dog story includes owned, community and free-roaming dogs, and that public safety and animal welfare must be addressed together.

International Dog Day should be more than a greeting

August 26 is widely observed as National Dog Day, founded in 2004 by animal advocate Colleen Paige. The day was created to celebrate dogs while drawing attention to animals in need and encouraging adoption. But perhaps the most useful way for the pet industry to mark the occasion is not another picture of a smiling dog. It is to ask a harder question.

Are we building the industry around what dogs actually need—or around what humans are willing to buy for them?

There is nothing wrong with a growing market. Growth brings investment, innovation, employment, better access and more choices for pet parents. But the industry’s ultimate measure of progress should not be the number of products launched or the value of the market alone. It should also be whether dogs are healthier, safer, better understood and better cared for as the industry grows around them. Because dogs don’t need more products.

They need better ones

And perhaps the next great opportunity in India’s pet industry isn’t simply to sell more to pet parents.
It is to understand pets better.
