PAWS Chicago Breaks Ground on 20-Acre Rescue Ranch — A First-of-Its-Kind Sanctuary for Pets Facing Euthanasia

What if a shelter felt less like a shelter — and more like a peaceful countryside retreat? That’s exactly the vision now taking shape outside Chicago, and it could redefine how the world thinks about animal rescue.

A Sanctuary Designed Around HealingPrevention at the Heart of the MissionA Proven Track Record of Saving LivesWhy This Story Matters Everywhere

PAWS Chicago, the Midwest’s largest no-kill shelter, has officially broken ground on its ambitious Rescue Ranch — a sprawling 20-acre campus in Hawthorn Woods, a northwest suburb of Chicago. Built on the grounds of a former equestrian center, the first-of-its-kind facility is dedicated to the animals who need help the most: large dogs and cats at the highest risk of euthanasia.

Construction is now underway, with the campus expected to open its doors in 2027.

A Sanctuary Designed Around Healing

The Rescue Ranch is being reimagined from stables and riding arenas into a modern haven for homeless pets — one built on the latest advances in animal behavior science and shelter medicine.

Once complete, the campus will offer individualized care for up to 80 dogs plus litters of puppies, housed in spacious suites with private outdoor patios where they can relax in fresh air while awaiting adoption. On the feline side, up to 80 cats and litters of kittens will enjoy daily enrichment and socialization, along with a dedicated Kitten Room, Senior Room, Feline Sun Room, and even a cat café.

The natural, low-stress setting is intentional. Big, fearful dogs often struggle in the noise and density of urban shelters — and rarely get chosen by city adopters. Out here, they get room to breathe, decompress, and show families who they really are.

“Nature is so healing,” said Paula Fasseas, founder and executive chair of PAWS Chicago, who described the campus as the future of animal welfare — a place designed around what animals truly need to heal, thrive, and find loving homes.

Prevention at the Heart of the Mission

The Rescue Ranch isn’t just about adoption. A high-volume Spay/Neuter Clinic on campus will expand access to affordable sterilization services, tackle pet overpopulation at its root, and help train the next generation of veterinary surgeons — with the surgery center equipped to perform hundreds of procedures every week.

Animals arriving at the ranch will come from Chicago Animal Care and Control, PAWS Chicago itself, and partner shelters, with the organization also ready to support Lake County communities as needs arise.

A Proven Track Record of Saving Lives

The numbers behind PAWS Chicago’s mission speak volumes. Since the nonprofit was founded 28 years ago, euthanasia of homeless cats and dogs in Chicago has dropped by a remarkable 89 percent. In 2024 alone, the organization performed more than 17,000 spay and neuter surgeries.

The Rescue Ranch is the next big leap in that journey — a flagship campus meant to serve as a national model for humane, compassionate care and push the region closer to a truly No Kill Chicagoland.

Why This Story Matters Everywhere

From India to America, shelters face the same heartbreaking equation: too many homeless animals, too little space, and the hardest-to-place pets paying the ultimate price. Projects like the PAWS Chicago Rescue Ranch prove there’s another way — one where thoughtful design, prevention, and compassion can rewrite an animal’s fate.

For millions of dogs and cats still waiting for a second chance, that’s a groundbreaking worth celebrating.
