When volunteers from Hazaribag’s Kritagya Group first found Tumu, a 4-year-old female stray dog, on June 13, her condition was critical enough that recovery seemed like an uncertain prospect at best. What followed was a nearly three-month medical battle involving multiple surgeries, chemotherapy, and round-the-clock care from a small but determined team of veterinarians and volunteers, culminating in a moment that felt genuinely earned: Tumu, fully recovered, being welcomed back to her original territory by the very community that had watched her fight for her life.

The Scale of What Tumu Was Facing

Tumu’s condition upon rescue was severe by any measure. She was found with a large external abdominal tumour weighing between 2 and 3 kilograms, alongside a separate internal abdominal tumour and a diagnosis of vaginal cancer, a combination of conditions that would represent a serious medical challenge even for a pet with immediate access to specialist veterinary care, let alone a stray dog surviving on the streets of Hazaribag.

The sheer scale of her condition meant that any treatment plan would need to be both aggressive and carefully sequenced, addressing the physical burden of the tumours themselves while also tackling the underlying cancer driving them.

Who Stepped In to Help

Tumu’s rescue and subsequent treatment were spearheaded by the Kritagya Group, an animal welfare organisation founded by Priyal Akhauri Singh, whose team identified Tumu’s condition and moved quickly to get her into proper medical care.

The treatment that followed involved a genuinely collaborative effort across multiple people and institutions. Two complex surgeries were performed by Dr. Smriti, a government veterinarian, addressing both the external and internal tumours identified during Tumu’s initial assessment. Beyond the surgical intervention, Tumu underwent six rounds of chemotherapy, administered under expert supervision to treat the vaginal cancer diagnosis directly.

Throughout her recovery, Tumu’s day-to-day care and shelter were provided by Joseph and Sushma Kindo, who took on the responsibility of looking after her during what was undoubtedly a long and physically demanding recovery process. Additional medical support came from Dr. Hemant, rounding out a care team that combined surgical expertise, oncological treatment, and dedicated day-to-day nursing.

Nearly Three Months of Recovery

The full arc of Tumu’s treatment, from her critical rescue on June 13 through to her eventual full recovery, spanned close to three months, a timeline that reflects just how serious her combined diagnosis actually was. Recovering from major tumour removal surgery alone typically requires weeks of careful monitoring; layering six rounds of chemotherapy on top of that, for a stray dog with no prior consistent veterinary history, represents an especially demanding recovery process.

That the team involved was able to see Tumu through the entire treatment plan, rather than stopping at a partial intervention, speaks to a genuine, sustained commitment from everyone involved, one that extended well beyond a single rescue moment into months of ongoing medical care and support.

Coming Home to Globe Wala Golambar Chowk

With her treatment complete and her recovery confirmed, Tumu was released back into her original territory at Globe Wala Golambar Chowk in Dipugarha on Sunday. Rather than a quiet, routine release, the moment was met with a warm reception from local residents, many of whom had likely known Tumu as a familiar presence in the area long before her illness, and who welcomed her back visibly happy to see her fully recovered.

That kind of community reception matters for more than just sentiment. For community dogs like Tumu, being released back into a familiar territory with residents who recognise and generally look out for them offers a far more stable, supported environment than relocation to an entirely unfamiliar area would.

Why Stories Like Tumu’s Matter

Tumu’s recovery is a powerful example of what’s possible when animal welfare volunteers, government veterinarians, and community members work together on behalf of a stray animal facing what might otherwise have been an untreatable, fatal condition. Access to this level of coordinated veterinary care, surgery, oncology treatment, and sustained aftercare, isn’t something most community dogs in India typically receive, making Tumu’s case a genuinely exceptional outcome rather than a routine one.

For organisations like the Kritagya Group, cases like Tumu’s likely reinforce the broader mission behind their work: that stray and community dogs, despite lacking an owner to advocate for them, deserve access to the same standard of serious medical intervention that any pet would receive when facing a life-threatening diagnosis.

A Reminder of What Grassroots Animal Welfare Can Achieve

Tumu’s journey, from a critically ill stray found with a life-threatening combination of tumours to a fully recovered dog returning to a community that clearly cares for her, stands as a genuinely uplifting story within India’s broader animal welfare landscape. It reflects what’s achievable when dedicated volunteers, willing veterinarians, and supportive local residents come together around a single animal in need, and offers a hopeful example for similar rescue and treatment efforts happening quietly across the country.
