Not long ago, a trip to the vet meant one thing: something was wrong. A pet was sick, injured, or overdue for a vaccination, and the visit ended the moment treatment was complete. That model is quietly disappearing across the UAE.
Today, pet owners across the country are showing up at veterinary clinics for entirely different reasons. Some are dropping their dogs off for structured fitness sessions or rehabilitation programmes. Others are booking day care so their pets can socialise while they’re at work. Many are seeking nutrition or behavioural advice long before any medical issue even arises — a shift reflecting a broader transformation in how the UAE’s pet care industry defines its role.

From Clinic to Full-Service Wellness Hub
One of the clearest examples of this shift is Groomy Pets, a three-storey villa in Masdar City that brings together a veterinary clinic, boarding, day care, grooming, indoor play areas, and even a dedicated pet gym under a single roof.
“Providing all services that pets and pet parents need at the same centre makes their lives easier,” says Luiz Mendoza, general manager of Groomy Pets in Abu Dhabi. He adds that the concept was also designed with the human-animal bond in mind, since modern lifestyles often make it hard for owners to spend quality time with their pets — something integrated spaces are specifically built to address.
For many families, pets are no longer simply animals sharing the home; they’re regarded as full family members whose physical and emotional wellbeing deserves the same attention given to everyone else in the household. That shift is reshaping not just how often people visit the vet, but what they expect to find once they get there.
Moving From Reactive Treatment to Genuine Prevention
Much like human healthcare, veterinary medicine in the UAE is increasingly prioritising prevention over cure. “The industry is moving from a reactive model focused on treating illness to a proactive model centred on prevention, wellness, but also lifestyle,” Mendoza explains, pointing to increasingly educated pet owners who now understand the value of exercise, mental stimulation, nutrition, and preventive medicine.
That rising sophistication among pet parents is also changing what kind of care they’re willing to piece together themselves. Fewer owners want to juggle separate businesses for treatment, grooming, boarding, and training. Instead, they’re actively seeking continuity — a single ecosystem that follows their pet through every stage of life.

A Retailer’s Leap Into Veterinary Care
That exact demand is what pushed The Petshop, one of the UAE’s largest pet retailers, to launch its first veterinary clinic this year: Aura Veterinary Centre in Dubai Investment Park.
“Aura Veterinary Centre was developed in response to what our customers have been telling us for some time: pet families today are looking for more than individual services,” says Amr Hazem, chief executive of The Petshop. “They want a connected ecosystem that supports their pets across every stage of life, from nutrition and grooming to preventive care, diagnostics, behavioural guidance and medical treatment.”
Aura was also designed with atmosphere in mind, aiming to make veterinary visits feel calmer and less clinical for pets and owners alike. “We have created a modern environment that prioritises comfort, reduces stress where possible and encourages a more positive experience during veterinary visits,” Hazem says.
Wellness Visits, Not Just Emergency Trips
The result of this shift is a growing emphasis on ongoing wellness rather than reactive treatment. Regular check-ups now increasingly double as opportunities to discuss diet, dental care, behaviour, mobility, and weight management, while rehabilitation and structured exercise programmes help pets recover from injury or stay active as they age.
“Veterinary clinics are increasingly becoming partners in a pet’s long-term health rather than places pet parents visit only during emergencies or illness,” Hazem says. “Regular wellness visits allow us to support healthier lifestyles, identify concerns earlier and help pet families make informed decisions throughout their pet’s life.”
At Groomy Pets, that philosophy shaped the creation of a pet gym offering structured exercise programmes tailored to different needs, from high-energy dogs requiring regular activity to senior pets undergoing rehabilitation. “For pets, structured physical activity helps maintain a healthy weight, supports mobility, improves muscle condition and provides important mental stimulation,” Mendoza notes, adding that the benefits extend well beyond the pet itself, strengthening the bond between owner and animal.
Where Pet Care Is Headed Next
Both Hazem and Mendoza believe the shift toward preventive, integrated pet care is only getting started. Hazem expects advances in diagnostics, imaging, genetic screening, and predictive healthcare to make veterinary medicine increasingly personalised in the years ahead, with digital health records helping owners stay more closely connected to their pets’ care.
Mendoza, meanwhile, sees integrated facilities combining healthcare, boarding, fitness, and enrichment becoming increasingly common as owners continue chasing convenience without sacrificing quality of care. “I believe the future of pet care lies in creating environments where pets can thrive physically, mentally and socially, while giving owners access to the expertise, facilities and support they need throughout their pet’s lifetime,” he says.
As the UAE’s pet population continues to grow, one thing is becoming clear: the veterinary clinic of tomorrow won’t just treat illness — it will be a genuine partner in a pet’s entire life journey.
