Britain’s largest pet retailer is off to a strong start in its new fiscal year, with recurring subscription services and a growing veterinary team driving accelerated growth.
Pets at Home reported consumer revenue of £614 million for the first quarter of fiscal year 2027, the period ended July 16, 2026 — a 3.9 percent increase compared to the same quarter last year. The retailer credited much of that growth to its expanding lineup of recurring revenue services, which now account for 15.3 percent of consumer revenue, up from 14.5 percent a year earlier.
Subscriptions Are Doing the Heavy Lifting
The retailer pointed specifically to continued growth across its recurring service offerings: Flea & Worm, a preventative parasite treatment subscription; Easy Repeat, its auto-replenishment service for everyday pet essentials; Complete Care, a preventative veterinary wellness plan; and Vac4Life, a lifetime vaccination programme.
Together, these subscription-style services are proving to be a reliable growth engine, giving Pets at Home a steadier, more predictable revenue base compared to one-off purchases alone.
Vet Group Revenue Climbs as Clinical Workforce Grows
The company’s Vet Group division posted consumer revenue of £215 million, up 1.9 percent year-over-year and broadly in line with expectations. Management attributed the performance to strong Care Plan sign-ups and higher average transaction values across its clinics.
To keep pace with growing service demand across its general practices and pet care centres, Pets at Home expanded its clinical workforce to 3,700 full-time equivalent staff, a 4 percent increase compared to the same quarter last year — a clear signal that the company is investing in staffing capacity to support its wellness and preventative care push.
This quarterly performance builds on a strong full fiscal year, with Pets at Home having reported £1.98 billion in group consumer revenue for the full FY2026 period ended March 26, 2026.
Retail Sales Also Picked Up Pace
On the retail side, consumer revenue reached £399 million for the quarter, up 4.9 percent, with the company noting that overall volume growth comfortably outpaced revenue growth, supported by a 2 percent rise in total retail transactions.
Active membership in its Pets Club loyalty programme stood at 7 million, down 13.6 percent from 8.1 million a year earlier — a decline the company attributed to a system methodology change made the previous year that filtered out lower-spending customer records and shifted some transactions out of official Pets Club status.
Despite the drop in raw membership numbers, engagement among remaining loyalty members strengthened notably. Average Consumer Value among active Pets Club members rose 16.7 percent year-on-year to £210, up from £180 in the same period last year — suggesting the retailer is seeing deeper spending from a more engaged core customer base.
A Turnaround Plan Starting to Pay Off
Pets at Home credited much of this quarter’s market share gains to its Retail Turnaround Plan, launched last November to counter previous profit declines and shifting post-pandemic consumer demand. Key initiatives during the quarter included comprehensive category resets across dog food, cat food, and treats, along with the launch of a refreshed store investment programme.
The quarter’s retail growth also received a roughly 1 percent timing benefit tied to the company’s exit from its legacy Petplan insurance agreement, as it works to launch its own branded pet insurance business.
Guidance Held Steady, New Leadership Announced
Looking ahead, Pets at Home has maintained its full-year financial guidance for fiscal 2027, citing a strong start to the period and continued market share momentum, even while acknowledging tougher year-on-year comparisons in the months ahead.
The company also confirmed its £50 million share buyback programme remains on track, being carried out in two £25 million tranches, with the first expected to complete by the end of the first half of the fiscal year.
On the leadership front, Pets at Home announced the appointment of Sarah Findlater as Group Chief People Officer, overseeing retail, vets, and insurance. Findlater joins after nearly three decades at UK retail giant Marks & Spencer, where she most recently served as Chief People Officer, and will officially start on November 2, 2026, reporting directly to CEO James Bailey.
