Routine patrol runs off the Mumbai coast don’t typically involve wildlife rescue, but that’s exactly what unfolded recently when officers from the Mumbai Police’s Yellow Gate station came across a sight none of them were expecting: a massive, 100 kg loggerhead sea turtle struggling to swim and stay afloat in the open waters of the Arabian Sea.

What began as a standard patrol quickly turned into a coordinated, multi-agency rescue effort, one that would eventually involve police officers, wildlife rescuers, veterinarians, and the Maharashtra Forest Department working together to give a rare marine species a genuine second chance.

The Officers Who Spotted the Turtle in Distress

The discovery was made by ASI Suresh Bhalerao, ASI Prashant Borse, and PC Nilesh Malusare, all attached to the Yellow Gate police station, during a routine patrol boat run along the coastline. As their vessel moved through the water, the team noticed the sea turtle visibly struggling, unable to swim or float normally, a clear sign that the animal was in serious distress.

Recognising immediately that this wasn’t a situation they could simply pass by, the officers took swift action. They brought the massive turtle aboard their patrol vessel, no small task given its size and weight, and began coordinating with local wildlife rescue organisations to arrange proper care.

From Rescue to Emergency Medical Care

Once the turtle was safely aboard, the next phase of the rescue moved quickly. Rescuers from RAWW (Resqink Association for Wildlife Welfare), an organisation with established experience handling wildlife emergencies across Mumbai, stepped in to transport the turtle for urgent medical attention.

The animal was taken to Dr. Rina Dev’s veterinary facility, where it underwent emergency medical evaluation and stabilisation. Given the turtle’s evident distress in open water, this initial veterinary assessment was a critical step, allowing experts to determine the animal’s condition and decide on the appropriate next stage of care before any further transport or treatment could safely proceed.

Mumbai Police Rescue Rare 100 kg Loggerhead Sea Turtle From the Arabian Sea

A Journey to Specialised Rehabilitation in Dahanu

Marine species like loggerhead sea turtles require highly specialised long-term care, far beyond what a general veterinary facility can typically provide. Recognising this, the rescue was guided onward by the Maharashtra Forest Department’s Mangrove Cell, which coordinated the turtle’s transfer to the Sea Turtle Transit Treatment Center in Dahanu.

The Dahanu facility, managed by WCAWA, is specifically equipped to handle the rehabilitation of sea turtles, offering the sustained, specialised care these animals need before they can be safely reintroduced to their natural marine habitat. This stage of the process is expected to involve ongoing monitoring and treatment until the turtle is deemed fit for release back into the sea.

Why This Rescue Required So Many Hands

What makes this particular rescue notable isn’t just the size of the animal involved, it’s the sheer scale of coordination required to pull it off successfully. The operation ultimately brought together the Mumbai Police, the Maharashtra Forest Department’s Mangrove Cell, RAWW, and the RiWild Sanctuary & Charitable Trust, each contributing a different, essential piece of the rescue chain.

From the initial spotting and physical rescue at sea, to emergency veterinary stabilisation, to specialised long-term rehabilitation, this kind of layered response reflects exactly the kind of infrastructure needed to give a distressed marine animal a genuine chance at survival. Loggerhead sea turtles are a globally recognised threatened species, and successful interventions like this one carry real conservation significance beyond just the individual animal involved.

Why Loggerhead Turtles Rarely Turn Up Like This

Loggerhead sea turtles are not commonly encountered struggling this close to a major urban coastline like Mumbai’s, which is part of what makes this rescue such a notable case for local marine conservationists. Their presence in distress in these waters raises broader questions about marine health, potential entanglement risks, pollution, or other stressors that may be affecting sea turtle populations along India’s western coast, questions that rescue organisations and forest officials will likely continue monitoring going forward.

A Message for the Public

Beyond celebrating the successful rescue itself, conservationists involved in the operation have used the moment to reinforce an important public safety message: members of the public should never attempt to handle stranded or distressed marine life directly.

Sea turtles, despite their slow and seemingly docile appearance, can be powerful and unpredictable when distressed, and improper handling can cause serious injury to both the animal and the person attempting to help. Instead, anyone who encounters a stranded or struggling marine animal has been urged to immediately alert local forest authorities or established wildlife rescue teams, exactly the kind of swift, correct response that made this particular rescue a success.

A Rare Win for Marine Conservation Off Mumbai’s Coast

For a species that rarely makes headlines along India’s busiest coastal city, this rescue stands out as a genuine conservation win, made possible only through fast recognition by alert police officers and a well-coordinated handoff between multiple specialised agencies. As the loggerhead turtle continues its rehabilitation in Dahanu, its eventual release back into the Arabian Sea will mark the successful conclusion of a rescue that, in many ways, depended on nearly everything going right at exactly the right moment.
