Ariana Grande announced on 19 October that Coco, her Dachshund–German Shepherd mix, had died at seventeen. The tribute travelled further than most celebrity pet stories, and many versions of it got one thing wrong and left one thing out. The error is small. The omission is the entire reason the story is worth reading.

The lifespan figures quoted here come from published veterinary research and are population averages, not predictions for any individual animal. PNN is relaying expert findings, not offering veterinary advice. Decisions about adopting, feeding or caring for a senior animal should be made with a registered veterinarian who can examine the animal.

What she wrote

Grande posted on Instagram on 19 October 2026.

“Sweetest, most amazing and most beautiful Coco. I am so proud of you. Thank you for your love, and for blessing this planet with your physical presence for over seventeen wonderful years.”

“You make everywhere you go a more beautiful place. I will miss you every day and hold you in my heart always. I love you so, sweet girl.”

The photographs included Coco standing on Grande’s ballet slippers, and a shot from Coco’s seventeenth birthday celebration, complete with a bone-shaped cake. A video showed Coco being coaxed into her morning leap from the front of the house: “Come on girlie, come on you got it.”

Coco had her own account on X, @MissCocoGrande, where she was described as the “Grande family doggy” and a “very happy puppy with a prominent underbite.” She appeared in Grande’s 2012 vlog Coco Breaks It Down, and in the music videos for Put Your Hearts Up (2011) and Positions (2020).

Cause of death has not been reported.

The detail most reports got wrong

Grande has previously said she got Coco in 2010, while she was working on the Nickelodeon series Victorious.

Several reports have combined that with Coco’s age and concluded that the dog was “by her side for more than 17 years.”

That does not add up. From 2010 to October 2026 is sixteen years, not seventeen.

The confusion comes from a misreading of Grande’s own words. She wrote that Coco blessed the planet “with your physical presence for over seventeen wonderful years.” That is a statement about how long Coco lived, not about how long the two of them were together.

Reconciling the two means Coco was probably around a year old or older when Grande got her in 2010, an already-grown dog rather than a new puppy. That is entirely plausible, and in rescue terms unremarkable. But nobody has reported it, and the contradiction has been published as fact.

The accurate statement is simply: Coco was seventeen, and she was with Grande from the early years of her career.

What seventeen actually means

This is the number that deserved the headline, and nobody ran it.

The largest recent study of dog longevity in the UK, the VetCompass analysis of 30,563 dogs that died between January 2016 and July 2020, produced these figures:

GroupYears
Life expectancy, all companion dogs11.23
Female dogs11.41
Male dogs11.07
Jack Russell Terrier (longest in the study)12.72
Standard Dachshund (median age at death)12.3
Miniature Dachshund (median age at death)10.5
French Bulldog (shortest in the study)4.53

Coco reached seventeen.

That is roughly six years beyond the average dog’s life expectancy, and longer than the longest-lived breed in that entire dataset. For a medium-sized mixed breed, it is exceptional.

It is worth sitting with what that means in practice. A dog that lives to seventeen spends its last several years as a geriatric animal, and those years are not passive. They typically involve more frequent veterinary visits, monitoring for the conditions that arrive with age, adjustments to diet, mobility support, and a great deal of day-to-day attention.

Dogs do not reach seventeen by accident. The birthday cake in those photographs represents years of work that nobody photographs.

The thing left out of most reports

In 2020, Grande opened an animal rescue in Los Angeles: Orange Twins Rescue.

Its stated purpose is to rehabilitate animals in need, despite their age or background.

Read that alongside the rest of the story. A person whose own dog lived to seventeen founded a rescue that explicitly refuses to screen animals out for being old.

As of 2024 she kept around ten dogs, most of them from shelters. One of them, Cinnamon, was rescued as a five-month-old puppy from a box on the street.

Coverage of Coco’s death centred on the tribute. Where the rescue appeared at all, it was a passing mention. It is the single most relevant fact in the story for anyone who cares about animals, and it tends to get cut because it is not a quote.

Why this matters in India

Senior animals are the hardest to rehome anywhere in the world, and India is no exception.

Walk into almost any Indian shelter and the pattern is immediate. Puppies and kittens move. Healthy young adults move, slowly. The old ones stay. They stay because adopters assume a short remaining life, expect veterinary costs, and worry about grief they can already see coming.

Every one of those concerns is reasonable. None of them is a reason not to adopt.

What a senior animal actually offers: a known temperament, no house-training phase, no adolescent destruction, lower exercise demands, and an animal that is usually calm in a way a two-year-old is not. What you are told you lose is years. What you actually get is certainty. You can see exactly who this animal is on day one.

And Coco is the argument against the arithmetic. An animal adopted at eight is not necessarily an animal with two years left. Nobody knew in 2010 that this particular dog had sixteen more in her.

If you are considering it, the practical steps are straightforward: ask the shelter for the animal’s full veterinary history, get a baseline examination from your own veterinarian before or immediately after adoption, and discuss what ongoing monitoring the animal’s age and condition call for. Many shelters will tell you honestly what a senior animal needs, because they want the placement to hold.

What to take from it

A woman in her thirties lost a dog she had known since she was a teenager herself. She wrote a few hundred words about it and the internet shared them.

Underneath that is a better story: a dog that lived six years past the average, cared for well enough to make it there, and an owner who turned that experience into a rescue that does not turn animals away for being old.

That is the part worth sharing. Not because it is sentimental, but because somewhere near you there is an eleven-year-old dog in a shelter run that nobody is asking about.

A note on this article. The lifespan figures quoted here come from published veterinary research and are population averages, not predictions for any individual animal. PNN is relaying expert findings, not offering veterinary advice.
