There is a detail about Ohh My Dog that most entertainment journalists have buried in the final paragraph — but for anyone who loves animals, it is the first thing you need to know.

The Film That Bollywood Has Been Waiting to MakeWhat the Trailer Shows — and What It Says250 Dogs and the Most Ambitious Canine Cast in Indian CinemaWhat Amit Rai Wants the Film to DoPankaj Tripathi: The Right Actor for This MomentWhy This Film Matters for India’s Pet Community

Pankaj Tripathi, one of the most sought-after actors in Hindi cinema today, chose to work on this film without charging a fee.

Not because he needed the work. Not because the budget demanded it. Because when director Amit Rai came to him with the story — a film about dogs, about a child’s love for her pet, about the bond between humans and animals in a country that has never quite reckoned with how it treats the creatures who share its streets and homes — Tripathi simply said yes.

“I thought it’s an important and necessary film,” Tripathi said at the trailer launch held in Mumbai on July 21, 2026. “I had worked with Amit on Oh My God 2, and when I heard about Ohh My Dog, I just told Amit that I’ll do the film, whatever my role may be. The bond between humans and dogs is built on unconditional love, trust, and loyalty, and this film captures those emotions beautifully.”

That is how Ohh My Dog began for its lead actor. With a single, unconditional yes.

The Film That Bollywood Has Been Waiting to Make

Ohh My Dog is directed by Amit Rai — the filmmaker who gave Indian cinema OMG 2, one of the most commercially successful and critically discussed social films of recent years. Rai’s return to theatres is not with another morality fable or courtroom drama. It is with something quieter, warmer, and in many ways more ambitious: a film about 250 dogs, a child, and the way animals teach humans things that humans cannot teach each other.

The film is produced by Amit Rai, Rajesh Bhardwaj, and Sana Warsi under two production banners — Babulal Biscope and Thinking Hats Entertainment. It stars Pankaj Tripathi, Pawan Malhotra, Maahi Rai, Rajesh Kumar, Geeta Agrawal Sharma, Vijay Mishra, Bulloo Kumar, Shreedhar Dubey, and Sulakhyana Baruah. And it stars Oscar and Bruno — two dogs who are not supporting characters but co-leads, receiving billing in the cast list alongside their human counterparts.

It releases in theatres across India on July 31, 2026.

What the Trailer Shows — and What It Says

The trailer of Ohh My Dog runs for approximately two minutes and thirty seconds. It opens with one of the most immediately recognisable pieces of audio in Indian pop culture history: Amitabh Bachchan’s voice, singing Mere Paas Aao Mere Dosto, Ek Kissa Suno — the opening lines of a song so embedded in the collective memory of a certain generation of Indian moviegoers that hearing it triggers something involuntary before a single frame of footage has appeared.

The choice is intentional. Rai is not just setting a nostalgic tone. He is making an argument, in the first five seconds of the trailer, that this film belongs to a tradition — the tradition of Hindi cinema that has always known that animals carry stories no human character can carry alone.

The story the trailer introduces is centred on a child and her missing dog. Dogs in the neighbourhood — and eventually, many more dogs than that — have been disappearing, and a young girl’s determination to find her pet sets the narrative in motion. Pankaj Tripathi appears as a figure of authority and complexity, his performance doing in the trailer what his performances always do: communicating interior life with economy and precision, saying more with a look than most actors manage with dialogue.

The child actor who plays the young protagonist leaves a mark that has already generated significant comment from everyone who has watched the trailer. The bond between child and dog — the emotional core around which the entire film is structured — is visible even in the two-and-a-half-minute cut, rendered with a naturalism that suggests either exceptional casting, exceptional direction, or both.

One of the trailer’s most discussed moments draws on the Mahabharata — specifically the famous episode in which Yudhishthira refuses to enter heaven unless the dog that followed him through his entire journey is permitted to enter alongside him. It is one of Indian mythology’s most tender and philosophically resonant stories about the human-animal bond, and its inclusion in Ohh My Dog signals that Rai is not making a light family entertainer in the conventional Bollywood sense. He is making a film that wants to ask something serious: what does it say about us, as a society, how we treat the animals that love us most unconditionally?

250 Dogs and the Most Ambitious Canine Cast in Indian Cinema

The number that keeps appearing in every piece of coverage of Ohh My Dog is 250.

More than 250 dogs are featured in the film — making it, by any reasonable measure, the most ambitious animal-centric production in the history of mainstream Hindi cinema. The logistics of filming with 250 dogs across multiple locations, in conditions that meet appropriate animal welfare standards, while also delivering the emotional performances the narrative requires, is a filmmaking challenge of a different order from anything typically attempted in the industry.

At the centre of that canine ensemble are Oscar and Bruno — the two dogs who function as the film’s primary animal leads. Their names have been prominently featured in all promotional materials, they appear in the cast list alongside their human co-stars, and their performance in the trailer has drawn the kind of comment usually reserved for exceptionally skilled child actors: they are present, emotionally legible, and impossible to take your eyes off.

Bollywood has a history of animal-centric films that have left lasting impressions. The 1985 film Teri Meherbaniyan remains one of Hindi cinema’s most iconic entries in this genre — the story of a loyal dog named Moti whose faithfulness to his deceased owner drives an entire narrative of love and revenge. Haathi Mere Saathi placed an elephant at the emotional centre of a friendship story that defined the genre for a generation. Entertainment, the 2014 comedy, built its commercial premise around a wealthy man’s dog and the inheritance dispute that followed. More recently, the Kannada film 777 Charlie — released in 2022 to enormous critical and commercial success across India and beyond — demonstrated definitively that a film centred on the bond between a man and his Labrador could move audiences of every background, language, and age group to genuine tears.

Ohh My Dog is positioning itself in this tradition. It does not pretend to be something else. The title, the marketing, the trailer, the casting — all of it is built around the film’s central conviction that the relationship between a child and a dog is a story worth telling at scale, with the full resources of Hindi cinema behind it.

What Amit Rai Wants the Film to Do

Director Amit Rai has been consistent and clear in every interview and statement about what he hopes Ohh My Dog will accomplish beyond its commercial run.

“Dogs teach us the purest form of love and loyalty without expecting anything in return,” Rai said when the teaser was first released. The film is explicitly designed to encourage what the production team describes as the peaceful coexistence of humans and animals in India — a theme that carries particular weight at a moment when India’s Supreme Court is navigating some of the most complex and consequential legal decisions about stray animal management in the country’s history.

The film promotes empathy. It promotes the expansion of compassion beyond the circles in which most humans instinctively operate. It asks its audience — the families who will fill cinema halls across India on a Friday evening at the end of July — to look at dogs differently. Not as pests. Not as threats. Not as nuisances on the street or problems to be managed by municipal authorities. As companions. As creatures whose love is, in Rai’s own framing, the purest form of love that exists in nature.

This is a politically and culturally significant message to put into a mainstream Hindi film in 2026. At a time when the debate about stray dog management in India has become sharper, more polarised, and more legally fraught than at almost any point in recent memory — when Supreme Court orders are being issued about dog removal from public spaces, when public incidents involving dogs generate immediate national attention, when the line between fear and prejudice becomes harder to maintain in public conversation — Ohh My Dog is choosing to make the case for empathy on the largest possible platform.

The film is not a political statement in the conventional sense. It is a story about a child and her dog. But stories about children and dogs, told well, at scale, with a cast led by one of the most trusted actors in Indian cinema, have a way of doing something that policy documents and Supreme Court orders cannot: they change how people feel.

Pankaj Tripathi: The Right Actor for This Moment

Pankaj Tripathi’s involvement in Ohh My Dog is not incidental. It is central to what the film is attempting.

Tripathi has built one of the most remarkable acting careers in contemporary Hindi cinema not on glamour, not on action, not on the conventional markers of Bollywood stardom — but on a quality that is harder to manufacture and more durable when present: trust. Indian audiences trust Pankaj Tripathi. When he says something in a film, they believe it. When he conveys emotion, it does not feel performed. It feels witnessed.

That quality — authentic, earned, working-class in its register, free from affectation — is exactly what a film about human-animal bonds needs at its centre. The love between a child and a dog is not a sophisticated emotion. It is not complicated by social dynamics or status or self-consciousness. It is direct, total, and uncalculating. Tripathi can carry that directly without making it sentimental.

His decision to work on Ohh My Dog without a fee is consistent with how he has described his professional choices throughout his career: he takes roles that matter to him, stories that he thinks need to be told, projects that align with something he genuinely believes. That he believes Ohh My Dog is important and necessary is the most effective endorsement the film has — and it is one that no marketing budget could have purchased.

Why This Film Matters for India’s Pet Community

For the Indian pet community — for everyone who has a dog or a cat at home, for everyone who feeds the street dog outside their building, for everyone who has ever argued about animal welfare in a housing society meeting or a family WhatsApp group — Ohh My Dog is arriving at exactly the right moment.

India’s relationship with dogs is one of the most complicated and contested in the world. More than 60 million street dogs. More than 3.7 million reported dog bite cases annually. Supreme Court orders restricting feeding and access. Housing societies banning pet dogs. Public spaces where the presence of dogs generates fear and conflict as readily as warmth and connection.

In the middle of all of that, Ohh My Dog is making a film that says: look at this child and her dog. Look at what they mean to each other. Look at what is lost when that bond is broken or threatened.

That is not a small thing to say. That is, depending on how well the film is made and how widely it is seen, potentially a culture-shifting thing to say.

Films have done this before in India. Teri Meherbaniyan did not change policy. But it changed how a generation of Indians felt when they saw a dog on the street. 777 Charlie, released in Kannada and dubbed into multiple languages, reached millions of people across the country who had never previously considered what a dog’s life looked like from the inside. Entertainment, for all its commercial comedy DNA, put a dog at the centre of a mainstream Hindi film and made crores at the box office doing it.

Ohh My Dog has the cast, the director, and the story to do something similar. Whether it also has the marketing, the distribution, and the cultural timing to reach the audience it is intended for will become clear on July 31, 2026.

But the intention is unambiguous. This film was made to make India love dogs a little more honestly and a little more bravely than it currently does.

Pankaj Tripathi agreed to be part of it for free because he thought that mattered.

He was right.
